Starter going bad?

Anyone know the symptoms of a starter going bad? Over the past year it seems as though every time I start my car it is though the cranking gets slower and weaker. Car still starts usually on the first or second crank but I'm just waiting for it to not start one day. Suggestions?

Re: Starter going bad?

How's the alternator/battery?

I think the starter can be tested at your local auto parts store if your really worried about it going out. I don't know what symptoms it'll make before going out but once it goes out it'll make a clicking sound and.... not start.

Replacement isn't too bad. Especially if you don't have a stock y-pipe. (Though I didn't have to pull the stock y-pipe on my '97 M6 car)

Re: Starter going bad?

My starter was going out on the '94 Z28 I had, experiencing the same symptoms you're describing now.

Replaced it with an LT4 (direct bolt-on) starter from a slightly newer Corvette (bought it at NAPA) and everything was fine again.

The LT4 starter is supposed to be better and last longer too, plus it was cheaper when I compared it to that of an LT1 starter.
