Spring Installed Height

How close does Spring Installed Height have to be to spec? I just don't want to go buy a micrometer for it--even though i will probably end up buying one. I am thinking of measuring a peice of something with a caliper that measure to .001 slide that in and shim till i get it to that height--what do you think?

The valve tips are going to be worn down...so how much shimming am i looking at?

Re: Spring Installed Height

Take the springs to a place that can check the spring pressure. The installed hgt., is just one facet of spring install.

I've done it a bunch of wasy but I like the Comp Spring Mic.

When I setup a head I like to get them within .000 to +.010 of the installed hieght I'm shooting for.

Re: Spring Installed Height

I'm just using LT4 springs. Heads on the car.

How much will they charge though......it's so easy to do---if it's going to be 100 bucks than i rather just buy a spring pressure checker for 75bucks--everything costs soo much just to have them push the spring down--since I will be using it later i'm sure I midas well just go buy me one. Anything is better than my 130,000 mile springs......It doesn't have to be that close--since it's the stock cam...not like i'm needing the extra pressure really anyway.

Where would i get shims to change height if it's off?

Not gonna quote a price here, as someone will make a liar out of me. We're talking nickels and dimes here (comparitively speaking) to have it done. Shcek speed shops, parts houses, or cam mfrs. sell them. Important to get correct ID/OD shim obviously.
