air pump needed for emissions ?

Well, my air pump died and i'm wondering if i really need to replace it to pass emissions. From what i understand it's only used when the engine is cold, then the catalytic converters take over.

If my cars warmed up - will it matter if the pump works or not for emissions testing ?

If i don't replace it - maybe i will remove it to save some weight on the front end.

It does reduce emissions at startup and helps to heat up the cat. If you must have it for visual, then it obviously would have to be there.

Re: air pump needed for emissions ?

About the only thing it will do is clean up the engine bay a bit. When I removed my engine it split in two pieces as I was going to remove it and it was rustier than hell so I doubt it worked. It is electric and is not belt driven so no real horsepower gain can be felt and the piping around the underside of the block from one side to the other is a PITA to get out!! I think you might save 5 lbs if that. There really wasn't much too it unless I am forgetting something. Air pump, hose, fittings from manifolds/headers. I got hooker long tubes w/o air so it all went. Now if warmer weather comes.....my z....I miss it....
