Some 383 Questions

Hey guys i have been thinking of doing a 383 the most budget way and i was wondering if any of you have any experiences you would want to share. What i am basically wondering is if you can use the stock pan on a 383 build and if you can use the 5.7 rods and a gm 847 cam or does it have to small base circle and if i use 6 inch rods will i have to. Some other things i was wondering is if i need to change the damper or can i do a internally ballanced 383. Would you do a 6 or 5.7 rod is it really gonna be a big difference. I dont know what to do or if i should just build a 355 i am trying to do it the most budget way possible. My heads are gonna be LE2 and my cam is a GM847 so i want to be able to build around that. Thanks for any input.

Yes, stock pan works fine on a 383. Worst possibility is a very minor dinging with a light hammer.

and if you can use the 5.7 rods and a gm 847 cam or does it have to small base circle and if i use 6 inch rods will i have to.

I'll let someone else take that one. I run 5.85" rods.

Some other things i was wondering is if i need to change the damper or can i do a internally ballanced 383.

The stock damper is neutral balanced. You can use it with an internally or externally balanced rotating assembly. The difference is on the flywheel or the flexplate, where the stocker has a balance weight, and it would have to be removed for internal balance.

Would you do a 6 or 5.7 rod is it really gonna be a big difference.

There is no significant difference between the two, particularly in an "economy" application.

Rod length does not effect clearance. It (choice of rod length) is trivial for nearly all appications.

I run the 5.7" rods on mine. Works just fine. Also I run the stock pan as well and have had no problems at all. If I had to choose again though I would go with a little insurance and run a little bit biger pan. Also, as the GM847 is a great cam I believe that if you are going to run a LE head you need to run a LE cam that matches the heads. That's why he makes them that way. You will get better results with a cam that matches the heads is basically what I'm trying to say.
