smoke from the shift boot

guys i need some help. i just bought a 95 Z with a 396 in it and whenever i get on it smoke comes from the shift boot area and it smells like anti-freeze burning. idk what the deal is. i know its not the clutch or anything cuz i'm not ridin it at all. idk if the anti-freeze burp tank over flows and gets on something causing it to smoke cuz the front end raises up quit a bit, but idk what to do or if i should worry. any info would be great thanks guys.

what colour is the smoke? perhaps you have a leak in your y pipe area?

I wouldn't think antifreeze from the over flow would make smoke. Steam maybe. I would check your y pipe and see if it's got oil spots on it. You may have a bad rear main seal or something.

it is more like steam i guess cuz it doesn't stay in my car it just goes away. but it does smell like antifreeze. how mush is a bad rear main seal and what does it do? i have a slight oil leak everytime i shut off the engine it leaves a little. the local shop said that it was comin from up top cuz there is oil all over my long tubes and all the way down, so idk. i just had the oil changed so i'm hopin that stops, cuz the guy i bought it from put mobile 1 10w 30 and then race weight 40 from royaly purple so idk if the race weight thinned it out too much i just put in mobile 1 5W 30. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Does your clutch slip at all, I've smelled burning clutches that hinted at smelling like antifreeze.

You've got me stumped, unless something is leaking down onto your y pipe?!

I have no steam or smoke, but I get the smell of anti-freeze at high speeds or if I get on it on the highway.

It's only happened once (over 124 mph)

but, I know what your talking about. I have not tracked the problem down either.

well basically, its not that hard to quite, the problem is though, that the rear of the heads are so damn far under the cowl. you may have to do it underneth...i cant remeber what size it is, but get a wrench on there and tighten it down...just get it nice and snug....

that tube is like an air bleed..pockets of air that may be trapped here and there are "removed" out of the heads....right now its not really hurting anyhting except your coolant level...its it wont fall that fast...just take care of it...

i have an LT4 motor in my 91 GTA so getting to that tube is very easy for me...btu the 4th gens have the motor under the dash, so its gonna be harder for u to get to it
