SMOG pass?
SMOG pass?
hey guys i am trying to get my car to pass smog.I tried once and it failed don't want to do it again till i know forsure it will pass. i need help reading this scanner?i am getting a high knock sensor about 154 or higher sometimes is that normal and can it affect the emissions to fail smog?i cleaned out my EGR valve and check it with the vacuum see if the valve the diaphram is working ryte and it is.i know that my EGR is working fine it will reduces carbon build up>!My reading with the two oxygen sensor is sometimes abnormal left would be 385 and right would be 689 and sometimes it would be the other way around left side would be higher is that normal?
pls help me give me some guide to check what sensors could be bad thats giving my PCM a bad reading maybe?Or give me any idea what to diagnos for it to pass smog.should i be getting some kind of a percent by the way with the EGR duty cycle coz im getting 0.0% and one time i had 99.4% when i was on the freeway, but everytime im at home car park but on im getting 0.0% on EGR cycle reading??

Re: SMOG pass?
I tried once and it failed don't want to do it again till i know forsure it will pass.
What did it fail for.... HC, CO, NOx? How close to passing was it?
i am getting a high knock sensor about 154 or higher sometimes is that normal and can it affect the emissions to fail smog?
You have "0" knock retard... that is the only thing you need to worry about. The "knock count" is an incrementing field, and it simply continues to increase, particularly at startup. If it isn't getting retard, its not a problem
i cleaned out my EGR valve and check it with the vacuum see if the valve the diaphram is working ryte and it is.i know that my EGR is working fine it will reduces carbon build up>
How does EGR reduce carbon buildup? Its function is to reduce combustion chamber temperatures to reduce the formation of the pollutant oxides of nitrogen (NOx). What is your point regarding carbon buildup?
!My reading with the two oxygen sensor is sometimes abnormal left would be 385 and right would be 689 and sometimes it would be the other way around left side would be higher is that normal?
At idle and part throttle, its entirely normal for the O2 sensors to cyle repeatedly from 0xx - 9xx mV. That's how closed loop control works. And since the left and right banks of the engine are controlled independantly, there is no reason for the O2 sensors to read the same thing at the same time. Only when you go WOT and enter power enrichment (PE) mode, will the O2 sensors be expected to produce similar readings on both sides.
should i be getting some kind of a percent by the way with the EGR duty cycle coz im getting 0.0% and one time i had 99.4% when i was on the freeway, but everytime im at home car park but on im getting 0.0% on EGR cycle reading??
EGR does not operate at idle. The EGR duty cycle tells you the % of the time the valve is open. It isn't supposed to be open at idle = "0%" duty cycle.
Desired Idle-650 RPM
Engine RPM-750 RPM
That's the normal programmed idle speed for an A4, in neutral. For some reason, its idling higher than its supposed to. Appears you may have a vacuum leak, or the throttle blades open too far, and the IAC motor is bottomed out at "0" and can no longer control the idle speed. See data below that indicates Idle Air Mtr Pos-0 steps
Coolant Temp-209.7F
Manifold Air Temp-86.9F
A/C Pressure-105 PSI
MAP Sensor-1.43 Volts
Throttle Sensor-0.64 Volts
Throttle Angle-0%
Battery Voltage-12.7 Volts
Barometric Press-4.91 Volts
All the above are normal
Left oxy Sense-457 mVolts
Right Oxy Sense-629 mVolts
Useless data. This is a single frame, for values that are changing faster than the scanner can read them (approx 9 times per second). You need a long term data log showing the values over several seconds... and look at them to see if the average is about 450mV. As noted in the earlier response, the left and right banks are controlled independantly, so the O2 sensor readings will not necessarily be the same in any single "frame" of data. However, they both should average about 450mV over a period of several seconds.
BLK LRN Cell-16
Normal cell for "idle"
Left Block Learn-value 138
Right Block Learn-value 120
You have an apparent lean condition on the left bank of the engine and a rich condition on the right bank. The PCM is adding fuel to the left bank to correct the "lean" and cutting fuel on the right bank to correct a "rich" condition. This is called "split BLM's" and is the problem you need to track down. You want the left and right values to be similar, and as close as possible to 128.
Left Integrator-value 125
Right Integrator-value 123
Again, useless data, since they are changing 9 times per second in response to the O2 sensor feedback.
Left Inj Pulse-3.6 mS
Injector Pulse-3.1 mS
Confirms the analysis described above regarding the PCM adding fuel on the left side (longer pulse width) and cutting fuel on the right bank (shorter pulse width).
Mass Air Flow-7gr/sec
Normal reading will be 6 to 9 gps.
CCP Duty Cycle-0.0%
Normal... no EEC purge during idle.
Idle Air Mtr Pos-0 steps
A problem. See description above. Somehow the engine is getting air to allow a higher than programmed idle. You need to find the source of this air leak. Or, your IAC motor is faulty.
Learned Idle Pos-32 steps
This is the value the IAC motor goes to when you start the car. That would be a normal reading for the IAC count, not the "0" you are getting.
Spark Advance-15*Deg.
Seems a tad low.... but not abnormal. This value will usually fluctuate around 18-22*
Knock Retard-0*Deg.
Knock Sensor-187
Normal. See earlier comments about knock retard and knock count.
EGR Duty cycle-0.0%
Normal. See earlier comments.
Vehicle Speed-0 MPH
Engine Run time-1083 Seconds
A/C clutch-Disabled
A/C-Not Requested
Park/Neutral-Detected
Cruise Control-Not Engaged
Brake Depressed-No
TCC Status-Not Locked
Fan # 1-OFF
Fan # 2-OFF
Air switch-Solenoid Off
Loop Status-Closed
Oxygen Sensor-Ready
R Rear Oxy Sense-Ready
Learn Control-Enable
All of the above are NORMAL.
trouble codes i guess!
Not at all... those are simply the line numbers of the data in the scanner.
You need to read my online guide to interpreting scanner dats:
