Cool Smog

Hi, hopefully some help out there. I have a 1997 z28 with a stock engine manual transmission. I want remove my smog (AIR) stuff and possibly an EGR delete. Just looking for some information. I would also like to do something to eliminate the check engine light after this is done. I also have a check engine light which has multiple codes which I think has to do with smog (AIR). P1416, P0154, P0410, P1133, P1153, P0157 these are the codes I have currently. Please any help will be appreciated

Re: Smog

You have 2 codes for air and 4 for O2 sensors. They could be related. The test of the AIR system turns on the AIR pump while driving, and looks at the O2 sensors to see if they are indicating “lean” in response to the added oxygen in the exhaust. Your sensors suffer from slow response times according to the codes, and may not indicate lean fast enough.

Best thing to do is fix the O2 sensor problems first.

Why delete EGR? Doesn’t affect performance, unless the valve is stuck open. Isn’t used at idle, isn’t used at WOT, isn’t used above 3,500 RPM. It's there to prevent high combustion chamber temperatures when lugging the engine at low RPM. Actually helps prevent detonation (knock).

Not a lot to be gained by deleting AIR. Only operates on cold start, no impact on performance. To delete these systems you would also have to have them “programmed out” of the PCM by someone who knows how to override the “system ready” flags.

Re: Smog

OP, I assume emission testing does not apply to your car???

If it does, you need to have functioning EGR and Air Pump, none of which deter performance if functioning properly
