This should be a sticky...

For those about to replace your optispark...

you do NOT need to pull the damper... all you have to pull is the crank pully...

A friend of mine pulled the damper to change his Opti and stripped the threads on the bolt and inside the crank shaft...

i found out that you can take off the pully and turn the crank to a point of which you can wiggle the Optispark out...

SAVE YOUR CRANK!!!

It has been posted more times than I can remember. Any write-up I have ever seen says this. Everyone should know by now. At least they can search on how to do something before they do it.

Your talking about the hub right? If so, then yes, you just remove the 3 bolts that hold the balancer on, and turn it at the right spot.

People should know by now how to remove the hub, too. There is no reason for damaging the threads if it is done the right way.

I guess it is the same with everything. If there is a way to screw something up, someone's gonna do it.

Sometimes it's easier to remove the hub especially if you have a March U/D pulley that has fused onto the damper. The last thing you want to do is take a hammer and start smacking on the damper...

Antisieze grease does wonders to keep parts from fusing together. Front wheel hubs to steering knuckles is another "fusion point".

Had one of those goofey underdrives this weekend. Stripped the bolt and the first few threads.

Eventually got the pulleys seperated, retapped the threads and bolt and got it all back together.

If we put a sticky up for every problem similar to this, there would be pages of "stickies" and no one would read them...... just like many people don't bother to search. We have only 4 stickies on the "Wheel and Tire" forum, and I can't find any evidence to suggest that anyone even looks at the Wheel and Tire FAQ, before they ask "what size wheels will fit on my car?"
