Building my new rear end

I'm new to the Z28 scene, I've always liked Mustangs and know a good bit about them I recently bought a 1997 Z28 and have noticed noise coming from the rear end.

Since I had already planned on building a stronger rear end, this really isn't a big deal. I just need some help/advice. I read the sticky... but... I still have a few questions.

Gas mileage isn't an issue at all for me. I do very little highway driving, very little driving period, really. My car is also a 6 speed.

My plan was to get a 12 bolt, but I'm not sure where to get one. Where should I start, and since I'm rebuilding it would it be ok to get a used one? What vehicles could I get a 12 bolt out of in a junk yard?

Also, I had planned on going with a 4.56 gear. Like I said, gas mileage isn't an issue and I rarely drive my Z28. Is this too much gear in your opinion?

What is the best place to buy a gear for a Camaro? Which brands do you prefer? Like I said I am honestly a Mustang person, and I always bought FRPP gears for my Mustangs.

If you have any links as far as the gears go, and where to get them/price/etc I would appreciate it.

And any information on the 12 bolt. Or just let me know if I should check in a junk yard. Is the 12 bolt a direct replacement as far as that is concerned? What all will need to be changed?

Thanks!

If I was in your shoes,I would go ahead and spend the $3000 or so and get one already done brand new w/ the axles and gears you want and it will be a direct bolt in from Moser or Strange.

I think 4.56's are a little steep unless your planning to build a different motor and spin it to 7,000-7,500. I would go w/ 4.10/4.11 whatever the 12 bolt ratio is if you plan to only upgrade the motor w/ heads/cam at the most.

Go ahead for the 12 bolt though, your def. going in the right direction.

Buying a used 12-bolt out of the junk yard involves a lot of fabrication, including finding a way to mount the torque arm. Might need to narrow it, have to swap over all the brackets, replace the posi (if it even has a posi), rebuild, new gear ratio, etc.

A 12-bolt from Strange or Moser will come with everything in place, ready to bolt in (some assembly required on the Moser):
