Should I start this motor?

Its been sitting for 3 years with no fuids in it, I can turn it over by turning the crank pulley by hand. I was just curious if any gaskets could have rotted away and would be worth replacing before I put the motor in the car or if I should just not worry about it and crank on the bitch. Also would it be worth priming the oil system before hand and how do you do this? Thanks again board!

I'd prime the oil system. Just pull the intake and the drive mechanism at the back and use a SBC oil pump priming tool and a drill. Wouldnt hurt to put new intake and t/b gaskets on it anyways, and then you wont have a totally dry start.

Prime the oil system really well. Might not hurt to pull the plugs out and put a little oil in each cylinder and turn it by hand to make sure everything is nice and lubed.

Re: Should I start this motor?

I bought a motor which sat for 3 years about a year ago. The only thing that was wrong with it is that the injectors got clogged and were not spraying anymore. I had to replace all of them.

Other than that, it's working fine. I did replace a lot of gaskets on it though. (not because they were leaking but because I did a cam swap)

It couldn't hurt to pull the valve covers off and dribble some oil over the rockers.

I guess when I add oil Ill pour it over the valvetrain then prime it with the intake off... I dont know where to start looking for an SBC priming tool..? and will it fit into any old electric drill? Sorry for the ignorance...

Any parts store will have one, and Yes the will normally fit in any drill! Good luck. Mine has never sat that long but it has sat for almost a year once and I just changed the oil and fired it up. No prblems!
