Should I buy a new MAF?
Should I buy a new MAF?
I have heard that the new high flow MAF will give you more horsepower. But are they worth it on a LT1? I have a stock MAF. Is this a good mod or not to invest in? What is a good brand MAF to buy?
Don't waste your money on them aftermarket POS MAF sensors. It is all hype, marketing or whatever you want to call it. Stick with your OEM GM MAF and your PCM will love you for it! And don't abuse your MAF by gutting it out either.
All this will do is skew the calibration which will cause the PCM to have to skew its fuel trims to get back in line. The MAF is a calibrated device with a known output which matches the calibration tables in the PCM programming. Thats why aftermarket MAFs don't work well in our cars, or gives an illusion of more power because when they are first installed the PCM thinks its rich so it leans out. Then it will learn whats going on and you will be back where you were. But the LTFTs will be skewed in order for it to correct!

I wouldn't bother with a new MAF unless yours is broken. By the time you max out a stock MAF, you will be looking for ways to imporve airflow which means you will want to get rid of it and go with a speed density setup.

Why bother with the pita tuning aspects of speed density when you can have an tunable aftermarket PRO-M MAF with real calibration tables that can be programmed into the PCM that you would never out grow. And then you can retain the drivability aspects of a MAF control system. Just my two cents worth, but SD are a real pain to tune especially with big cams.

Also yes it depends on what ECM you are using. If you are thinking about going aftermarket to FAST or ACCEL, yes its easier but.....I can gurantee you that you will never get the drivability or the reliability of a GM PCM with an aftermarket ECM. I have done many conversions on late model EFI cars including my own, and the best part is if the thing dies, a GM PCM from GM costs me an average of $110 try that with a ACCEL of a FAST.
