Shoe, etal. what's the truth here?

Ref a thread today regarding v springs. What is the "real" seat size on our Lt1s? As I mentioned in the thread, I have crane springs 99893 with an OD of, I believe 1.460 and yet someone said that their springs with a dia of 1.430 would not fit without machining. I really don't believe my heads were machined: and...I seem to recall a long time ago that the seats are larger than most think.

It would be helpful to know how large a dia spring the stock heads will accept and it continues to be controverial.

Not ignoring your thread, but I think it would be better answered by the professional engine builder type people on this board.

It's possible some of the confusion is from the different LT1 heads... Iron Lt1 heads have smaller diameter springs.... Maybe the person you heard with the problem had iron heads ?

Re: Shoe, etal. what's the truth here?

Well, most of the Lt1s on this site have aluminum heads and many threads are about what springs to use. Of course the best response would be to use the springs that have the pressures and installed heights recommended on the cam cards.

Since the Lt1 springs are relatively small, even going to higher lift rockers should be accompanied by stouter springs. Lt4 springs, I believe are 1.337 OD and yet it has been reiterated numerous times that the seats are 1.25: but as it has been pointed out that OD may be for vortec heads.

So I was just trying to see if anyone has the actual dia for the spring seats for the Aluminum heads so that anyone planning to upgrade their spring pressures to accommodate more lift could actually find a single spring with larger OD that would accommodate the upgrade.

So actually if someone has a head lying around they could measure the OD for us and put this puppy to bed.

It means when you want the truth, you ask the right people. I did not feel like I had the knowledge to answer this question, so I defer to the other experts on the board (of which there are many). I don't want to steer anyone wrong. My input was asked for, though I did not give much.

I ran a 1.46 OD spring and it fit, BARELY. I would say thats as big as you can go.
