Shift kit install? Thermostat Q
Shift kit install? Thermostat Q
As the title applies... I just bought a B&M shift kit and was wondering how hard it is to intall while the trany is still in the car. How much harder is it really then if the tranny was upside down. I dont what to get in over my head. Also, recently installed a hypertech 160 degree thermostat and now my temperature gauge doesnt move off the peg. Sound like a sending unit or something else? By the way does anybody know the email address of combination motorsports and Madwolf computer programming? cant seem to kind it

I have my stage 2 kit installed in the 95 while it was still in the car.
I think they charged me for an hour of work.
I don't consider that a DIY project unless you feel comfortable working on transmissions.

Re: Shift kit install? Thermostat Q
yeah your right.... So a tranny shop only charged you for an hour or so of work. Thats pretty cool. That huge labor fee was what I am trying to avoid.
There are a couple of shops here in town... I will go check them out. How did you like that stage 2? Tahts what I m installing. Were there any draw back that you didnt initially expect?

Re: Shift kit install? Thermostat Q
I'm not sure what the stage 2 consists of in the current kit.
I did my 95 over 5 years ago.
It really did help firm up shifts, but I really did it so I could do WOT 3-4 shifts.
Which I promptly tested
A lot of shops won't do shift kits, they prefer to do their own thing.
I'm not sure if that is good or bad,
I'm ok with that; as long as they use the right parts and charge you a reasonable fee.
I need to do the 93 sometime soon.

Re: Shift kit install? Thermostat Q
The B&M and Transgo shift kits are all overengineered, but they do work. The shops take shortcuts like blocking accumulators & using washers instead of springs, and they also work. The worst part about doing a shift kit with the trans in the car is that it NEVER stops dripping and it is really hard to get to the 1-2 servo. It's def easier out of the car, but a lot of guys, including me, have done it from down under.
Re: Shift kit install? Thermostat Q
Eh it's not that bad really to do yourself. I did a transgo kit and watched the included video twice before doing it, and it's pretty durn straightforward and the instructions are real clear.
Took me a few hours to do it as a first timer, and this was quite a few years ago w/ less wrenching skill.
