Semi-Cheap 383 Cam Selection Help
Semi-Cheap 383 Cam Selection Help
Ok, so i'm in the process of building a semi-budget minded 383 build.. I bought a CC503 w/ less then 5k on it awhile back for $150 back when I was going to build a stock crank, stock headed 355.. Well plans changed and now I have a fully forged 383 Callies setup w/ slightly ported stock casting(flow #'s below) and am thinking the cam might be too small.. I've got pretty much all the supporting mods(setup below) but i have been out of the game for awhile now so i dont want to overpower myself as this will be the first car with some actual power that I have driven in 5+ years.. I'm waiting to buy a custom grind after I get more seat time with the car and can afford to get the heads re-ported..
So my questions are:
What cam would you guys reccomend that would get me around 7.5's in the 1/8th mile?

Why not use what you have for now and see how it runs? Then if you have your heads professionally ported you can pick up a custom cam to match the flow #'s. Maybe you'll get lucky and the heads won't need much work.
I love 383s because if you set them up right you can have a motor that makes great torque and hp without spinning it to the moon which makes for an outstanding street/strip set up...I'm all about cams with smallish duration (no more than 230 @ .050) and big lifts to .570" with stock ported heads...An off the shelf grind that works very well is the LPE 219/219 .560/.560" on a 112...Most will say that its wayyyy tooo small, but Lingenfelter knew what he was doing...
The 503 is a good cam for duration, but a little shallow on the lift even with 1.6s, but it's not a bad choice either. I run a Joe Overton spec'd custom that in the 220/230 range with .568" lift and its just awesome in my set up...You don't need big gears and big converter if you go with smaller duration and bigger lifts...

ok, so i guess i'll just stick with the 503 until I get some seat time and get the suspension worked out..
Another question,
I need a new balancer and flywheel so which ones should I get? I want it all internal.
Thanks for ya'lls help guys!

I'm not knocking the high revving 350/355 guys...I give you guys tons of credit...Its just not my thing...Javier, your car is badass without a doubt and runs as it should...
My motor has been togther for 12 years and I think part of the reason is the relatively low rpms it sees...I dig smaller cams with bigger lifts and they work well in 383s...
If I can get this thing into the 11.teens at my next track outing and have it do it by only going to 6300 I think that's pretty cool, too..
