Running rich, off and on gas smell, HELP

Ok,
My 94 Z just had a tune up and upgrades including MSD Ignition (Cap, rotor, wires, plugs) and Edelbrock Heads, other than that though the car is stock. Every now and then i get this kinda strong gas smell, which obviously i take it as running rich, but what could be causing it. im pretty sure the gap in the plugs are good and the timeing should be right cuz i just had a speed shop install the above. I was thinking that it could be my MAF or maybe just a O2 Sensor. But if anyone else has any suggestions on what to do let me know.

Also, What should my timeing be set to? I dont know a whole lot about this motor, as i have just bought this car about 2 weeks ago and im still trying to learn. please help. Thank you.

Timing is set and controlled by the computer. The only way to change it is to reflash the computer.
I would look for burnt plug wires,to much plug gap,a faulty sensor somewhere, get it read for codes it has thrown(if any),bad fuel pressure regulator,O2's.
Just have it read for codes at Auto Zone and go from there.

Re: Running rich, off and on gas smell, HELP

Did it run rich before all those parts? Or has the problem only started after the work was done?

One possibility is a poor tune, but since the Edelbrock heads don't really flow any more than the stock heads, that shouldn't be an issue (were your old heads damaged? .... the Edelbrocks are not a good replacement choice). Common causes of running rich include misfires and exhaust leaks before the O2 sensors. Possibly a broken plug porcelain, wires not fully snapped on the plugs, wires damaged or not spaced cleanly, leaky exhaust manifold gaskets, problems with the coil or IC module, etc.

When you say you smell fuel, is it at the exhaust tips, or somewhere else? Do you still have the catalytic convertor?

Re: Running rich, off and on gas smell, HELP

Yes it did run rich before, but it also was misfireing so im going to check so see if the plug wires are all snapped on all the way., and yes my heads were damaged, i was going to get the LE2 setup but i needed my car fast and those were the only heads that i could find for fairly cheap and in a hurry, i just didnt have time to wait for parts. the wires are brand new and so are the plugs and im pretty sure that the tech gapped them right, but you never know. i had taken the car to a chevy dealership and they hooked it up to there scanner and they didnt say anything about any codes or exhaust leaks.
My car does still have the CAT, and when i smell gas its not all the time, but sometimes ill smell it at the exhaust and others i wont and other times ill get on the gas and when i let off sometimes ill smell it at a stop light when im in the car. I just had my gaskets replaced so i dont think that could be it, unless we put them on wrong but i dont think we did. Im going to to to auto zone and have the computer scanned for codes and ill get back to yall. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Running rich, off and on gas smell, HELP

just got back from autozone and i have no codes. I really havent been able to smell any gas today and i put about 100 miles on it. i only smelled gas like twice and both times were when i got on it and had to stop at a light. other than that it hasnt been acting up. Hopefully its nothing but if not, any other suggestions? Thanks
