Replacing Engine

Hi all,
I have to replace the engine in my 95 z28. I haven't seen too many LT1 engines for sale locally. There was a rebuilt 350 for sale around here that I was interested in. It was an older one and I was wondering what I would have to do to get it to be compatible or if it would even be able to be. Here's the engine he has: http://tippecanoe.craigslist.org/pts/1615603950.html

I contacted him and he said it only needs: Carb, Water Pump, FLy Wheel, and headers to be completed. He said he'd take 850 for it.

Would this, and if so is it worth the effort, be able to work in my 95 z28? If not does anyone have suggestions on what I should do for an engine?

Thanks for all the help guys!

While the Gen II SBC (your LT1) and the Gen I SBC share the same rotating assembly, the heads and accessories are not interchangeable.

I think he's doing a full engine swap, not partial. The Gen 1 SBC will bolt in, and since its a carb, and has a distributor, it doesn't need to interface the engine with the PCM. The main questions will be 1) does the distributor fit under the cowl, and 2) does the carb fit under the hood? The answer to those questions will be a function of the specific parts used on the Gen 1 engine.

The PCM will need to be retained to control the speedo.

The fuel system will need to be revised, since the LT1 had a 43.5psi recirculating system, and you need a much lower pressure system for a carb.

What trans are you running? If you have a 4L60E, you need a PCM to shift it. If you have an M6, I think you need some adapters to mount the T56 to the Gen 1 SBC. And you will need the signal from the PCM for the reverse lockout solenoid.

The heavy cast iron heads may cause the front end of the car to drop excessively, requiring new springs.

Engine

My camaro has the stock a4 trans. Also judging by whats left to complete the engine and with redoing the fuel stuff, springs, and what-not would it just be cheaper to find an engine and have it shipped? I am not very well with cars yet and would have to have everything done for me. My budget for the whole job would be around 1600-1800(including getting it put in). If it would be about the same could you go a little more in depth on what parts i should use, or need to check what he put on, about to make sure it fits? Also what happened to my old engine is that the rods were knocking. Would it be cheaper to take this and have it rebuilt?
Thanks for all the help guys!

Get it rebuilt, your not going to get it done for 1800.00 though. Not right anyways. certainly not installed.

Rebuilt

Yeah I thought about getting it rebuilt but I'm a college student and barely getting by and this is about the highest I can go on my budget right now. I found a 70k mile engine for 800 and getting it shipped and put in here they estimated around 1600. It comes with a 90 day warranty. Should I just do this deal or would it really be worth it to save up what I can for a little more to get it rebuilt? What would a decent rebuild cost?

Someone was selling off an old stock of new (not rebuilt) LT1's for about $1,800. Might want to look around for people who have bought them.

Go to hawks third gen parts online. They sell complete used longblocks with low mileage for 1500 max and if you want you can buy the short blocks for 500 dollars max the best deals you will get and they will perform. If i were you id get the short block and put my accessories on it. I dont know what happened to your motor but to get the job done you wont find better deals with guarantees. If you knew somone with a hoist you should definately get a short block and have it mailed to his house or wherever and put it in will save tons of money after that buy a haynes manual and finish that bitch besides if its you car it would be nice to work with it and get to know the car your driving. Its a wonderful machine. good luck man.

Do you work for, or are you providing unpaid advertising for "Hawks Third Gen"? If so, you need to contact the Admins for advertising rates. You seem to include this reference on 90% of your threads??????

man, let me tell you how I solved my similar dead engine problems. i bought the 94 motor in my 94 on here for 300 dollars plus 280 shipping. It had 90k on it, and hadn't run in over a year. When I got it and started swapping out accessories from my other 94, I found cat food in the intake and all crusted behind the waterpump.

once everything was bolted up, the damn thing started first try. I'm a big fan of used engines despite how ugly and dirty they can be. They will save you if you are on a budget. The best part is if you buy a complete running used shortblock, you get to keep your old engine and rebuild it. its only going to cost me 300 bucks to replace all the bearings, bolts, and head gaskets. Add in the 200-300 rebuild and assembly cost and you're looking at two running engines for just around the cost of a usual rebuild. if you run out of money, you can pony up a few hundred to rebuild the old 1 in a hurry and sell it for around 2k

Engine

Yeah I would really like to learn how to rebuild the engine and get more into auto mechanics, but I'd like to find a good running used engine this time so that I don't mess-up if I were to have to swap parts, etc. Got any good sites to find nice used engines on that don't require the cores?
Thanks again for all the help everyone!

there is a place called T/A creations, they usually have great prices.

and dude, there are few of us that ACTUALLY rebuild an engine ourselves, that is such precision work and requires a lot of tools. You can take a disassembled block (you can take all the parts off yourself I'm sure) to the machine shop with new bearings and whatever else you want put it. They usually charge between 250-400 to assemble and balance an engine.

Location

I'm located in Indiana 47905 so shipping would be a little steep from maryland, but thanks for the link and help! Also to Ghostz28: that is what I meant was to disassemble the engine and get familiar with what parts look like and what-not. Also thanks for the advice! Anyone in Indiana know of a good machine shop btw? Preferably around the Indianapolis or Lafayette area. Thanks everyone!
