Removing LT1 crank pulley ?!

This might sound kinda dumb to some, but i'm doing a cam swap and need to remove the crank pulley. Now i got a decent pulley puller and removed all four bolts, including the middle one, ok np. Now installed the pulley puller and it got REALLY hard, so i kept going nice a slow. I even paused a few times to let things cool from the pressure. I keep going and BANG! the tip of the pulley puller's middle driver shatters!

Ok, no bigy i got 75,000 miles on it, it might be alittle stuck. So i run to the parts store and buy another puller. Get home and do this all over again, this time CRACK! the damn piece that you put all the bolts through splits right in half!

So i get the old puller's piece out and use that, it looks alittle stronger why not? So after awhile i'm like ok, yea .. this is holding up .. then it starts getting easier, and i'm like yes! only to realize i stripped the threads out of the middle bolt (not the 3 that go into the pulley). . .

I'm i missing something here?

when your removing the hub you got to make sure your pushing againt the crank and not the hub itself(what your doing)

you need to either find a longer bolt that has the same thread as the hub bolt, screw it in and have the puller push off against that.

Re: Removing LT1 crank pulley ?!

On my first TA ('95), I was trying to take off the crank pulley to change my opti and the thing wouldn't budge either. I also bent some pulley-pullers. I ended up spraying the damn thing twice a day with PB-Blaster penetrating oil and after abuot a week, it came off okay. When in doubt, PB BLAST IT!!!

Re: Removing LT1 crank pulley ?!

You don't need to remove the hub bolt to remove the pulley, I used a 3 jaw puller with the center of the puller pressing against the head of the hub bolt and it came off with almost no problem at all. Put the hub bolt back on and get a 3 jaw puller, not a steering wheel/harmonic balancer puller. The pulley comes apart from the hub, if your screwing the bolts in for the harmonic balancer puller your probably screwing them right back into the hub and therefore you'll never get it off. The LT1 crank pulley was designed to be removed without a puller but of course after all the miles your hands won't be strong enough to pull it off, that's why I used a 3 jaw 2 ton puller.

Now I'm not sure if he means the pulley or the hub?

If he is doing a cam swap, so the hub must come off.

Though, perhaps he does not know that the pulley and hub are two pieces. They can be removed as one, if desired.
