removing the cat!

Ok we all know how cali if strict with the emisions! Well I was thinking of removing my cats after my smog in sep. I wont have to do it again till 2014. What do yall think, would be a benefit to remove the cat converters and put em back on before I smog it again?

Re: removing the cat!

Probably a couple HP at best. Definitely not worth the effort.

What happens if a cop is sitting behind you in traffic and smells the unburned fuel?

Another suggestion get a extra set gut them out make both sets so you can easily bolt and unbolt . Pass emissions unbolt original set put on gutted then flip back before emission testing again , but I believe you would need to tune your back o2 out because you have 2 after the cats I think ? Or it will throw a ses light

Re: removing the cat!

I just had to do this, bolt back in the cats for emissions. But mine aren't removed for performance, really not much gained if you have hi flow cats. I remove them because the lt headers sit so low my wife doesn't pay attention to bumps and driveway ramps and speed bumps and ends up bottoming out and scrapping them and breaks the substrate in them. After buying several replacement I simply hollowed them out so it appears I have cats. 3-bolt flange to the header and a slip fit band clamp on other end, takes about 15-20 mins to remove and replace with real cats with same fittings.
Yes on a 97 you'll need to program out the rear o2s or replace with sims. But again not much performance gain for the time if you have hi flows already.
