removing 4l60e

[quote=Chet1185] 95 z28

What is the easiest easy to get to the top two bolts on the transmission? Tried removing the Trans out of my Trans am before but couldn't get them even with a long extension. I felt behind the top of the engine and I can feel the bolts, can they be removed from the top?

I posted this in the drivetrain section and got no responses.

A long extension. And I mean LONG. Whenever I have to get to those bolts I use a short 4" wobble extension plus a 35" long 3/8" extension.

I don't want to sound dumb but the wobble extension is the one that looks like a regular extension just a different shaped head?

Yes, it's literally called a wobble. Not quite as flexible as a universal but allows a few degrees of extra movement.

Re: removing 4l60e

Let the tailshaft of the tranny drop down. You can gain a bit more drop by gently pushing up on the front of the engine to tilt the tailshaft down. Then it's easier to use the long extension from under the car. You can substitute a universal joint for the "wobble".

Re: removing 4l60e

If you do use a universal drive make sure you wrap the universal portion in tape (I use electrical tape). It will keep the socket straight enough to get onto the hex head but will still allow for the "universal" movement. Nothing worse than reaching horizontally with a socket only to have it flop down an inch before the bolt.

Re: removing 4l60e

We've always made it a 2-man job. One to hold the ratchet and one to reach up over the trans to hold the socket on the bolt....

Re: removing 4l60e

I don't know if the transmission in our cars has a mount for the dip stick on one of those top bolts
my 4x4 does... If it does be sure you put it back in first !! once you have everything bolted back up
it is impossible to take that bolt out to put the dipstick mount back in place leaving you with a sloppy dipstick .. don't ask how I know this Lol ha ha. I was able to put the dipstick mount back on a year later when I put a body lift on the truck. good luck!!!

This is how we did the trans in my car. Longest extension we could find, and a universal socket. Worked coming out, and going back in.
