TCI Converters

Chris said,
"John,

IMO the B&M and TCI converters are just glorified stockers."

What is this opinion based on?

This is the straight poop. TCI has been in business for 35 years. They make torque converters for some of the fastest cars in the world...Guys like the Scranton Brothers, Edmond and Scotty Richardson etc...

I'm not sure if you are familiar with very many NHRA stockers, but there are some really fast F-bodies running TCI converters...Amy Faulk ran 10.70s in her LT1 '97 TA...Now she's running 10.5s in her LS1 car. Harry Doolittle is running a TCI converter in his 3800V6 Firebird. He has ran as quick as 12.53 in NHRA legal competition.

I've seen the inside of almost every converter that has been mentioned in this post and none of them are better than the TCI converter.

The SLP is a modified stocker...the B&M and TCI definately are not reworked stockers. You are too gullible.

I guess I just don't quite understand your problem. You are doing quite well in the 1/4.

Your 60s are good.

What kind of power do you believe you should have with your mods?

A larger TC without the power to take advantage of it seems a tad wishful.

I'm probably all wrong here, but I don't think you have a problem what with your set up, unless I am missing something obvious. JMHO

Bubba,

The problem I am having is, before the converter I was able to run a 9.0 on street tires. Now after the converter and drag radials I ran a best of 8.9. The drag radials improved my 60' time by .1, and my ET was improved by .1 because of the quicker 60' time. Obviously this converter is doing nothing for me.

I have cut a 1.99 60' time before, but with this converter I just cannot cut lower than that. I can garauntee that if I put the stock converter in there I could cut those 60' times or lower.

Not only that, I was an idiot and bought the converter used. It had been sprayed off the line before, and I really think something is messed up in it. It makes a roaring noise when it's in gear but the car is not moving. In addition to that, it makes some other soft, but odd noises now.

I guess it comes down to me seeing an area for improvement in my car. I see many guys running bolt on 12s, and although I doubt I'll see that, I want to be that much closer. The midwest stall I'm getting will be a 9.5", with a 12" lockup section. It's a 2800 stall with a 2.5 STR. We'll see how that goes.

Let us know. I was looking at a 2600-2800 stall myself. It would be great to hear how yours does!

To begin with, I don't believe that you can really compare Ets, etc, esp. with such small differences unless all of the contributing factors are equal, e.g., temp, humidity, track conditions, etc.

It still seems like going to a larger TC without having the additional power is probably not the best way to go.

Maybe that is why your stock TC works better with your power. Mind you, I don't know because I have an M-6 with 400+ at the crank, 4.10s and probably no traction (afraid to find out because I don't want to break my 10 bolt).

had that same problem. It was my converter went from a broke 3000 stall( cut 1.9 s) to a brand new 2500 (cut 1.7s).

If anything, when I ran the 8.9 the weather was better. 65 degrees and low humidity. Still though, if I have some good bolt ons, and a converter and am running 8.9, I need to sell the damn car and get one that runs.
