relocating alternator
relocating alternator
Do any of you guys know if there is an aftermarket bracket that moves the alternator under the passenger side header? I have seen one example where someone moved their alternator down under the plug wires on the passenger side, and this would save me a TON of time and problems when re-adjusting RR's... also if I want to install a supercharger in the near future
. Also, if anyone knows of any other way to relocate this I am definitly interested in any different place NOT above a valve cover. Some nice crome valvecovers would look nice.
any advice appreciated, thanks

There are a couple of alternator relo brackets for the LT1 (Madman, SJM) but they are used when there is nothing being driven except the alternator. I've seen a couple attempts to develop marketable systems for relocation of the alternator while still running PS and A/C...... might want to try a "search" - people have posted some photos, I believe.
Some inspiration. This guy made his own brackets out of blocks of billet aluminum, and converted to a CS130 alternator and a Type II "TC" P/S pump. (For clockwise rotation):

Like Injuneer pointed out, there are alternator only brackets available. It's only when you try to keep more than the alternator that things start getting complicated. Our stock "CB" P/S pumps are internally vaned to rotate counter-clockwise, so that must be taken into consideration when changing accessory positions and belt routing.

interesting, ya the only thing that will be used that is belt driven is the power steering pump. I dont have anything in my AC system still installed except the actual compressor because I liked using stock size belt. If I could find some way to mount the power steering elsewhere that would be nice... that pic is a good idea. anyone know where to find this type of power steering pump?

I just did a little trimming on the stock bracket, made a couple simple brackets one on the front and 1 on the back. Even reused the stock Alt. with no mods to it at all. It's a tight fit but there is plenty of clearance for me.
As much as I like this one and the idea, I can tell you there is no way there is enough belt to pulley contact to make this set up reliable. Under load the alternator will want to stop turning and the belt just has no where near enough contact to keep it going.
It will probably work for light loads and may even be usefull for a while but its not a good belt configuration...
You should try to get that tensioner to push up and run the belt over it then to the alternator. Might take some custom bracket or even some other tensioner.
moving the tensioner there would make it near impossible to change plug wires is the main problem I see. The first picture I like best, what kind of a crank pulley is that? I am interested in that crank pulley and the power steering pump if anyone knows where to get something like that.

(I took the liberty of giving it some attention with the buffing machine.) This bracket is a pretty slick design because the "claw" that holds the pump actually slides fore and aft to make it easier to adjust for pulley alignment. The stainless link bar is both a support and acts as a belt tensioner. (Can be adjusted.) When installed it looks something like this:

One end of the stainless link bar uses a water pump bolt to hold it in place.
Compared to what I paid for my cast iron TC pump, this is a smoking deal because it has the better aluminum pump and comes with a v-belt billet pulley already installed:

And a billet v-belt crank pulley:

Here's the Madman bracket that mounts your alternator low on the passenger's side that you can just run off the stock serpentine pullies:

This is as close to a "bolt on" operation as you're going to get for something like this. Since you'll be using a separate pulley on the front of the balancer for the power steering, you might possibly have to use some spacers behind the bracket to get it to sit far enough out to line the pulleys up, but that would be the extent of it. If you like the power steering bracket, I could probably cut you a deal on mine since I won't be needing it anymore. Never used, was only taken out of the package for inspection/pics. PM me if interested.
I had one on my SS and it worked great.
