my car used to leak a LOT. i changed the rear main seal and i think someone should have payed me to do it on my own car, cause that plain sucked ***. I didnt change the pan gasket because it was fine, but i used a LOT of RTV to hopefully seal every up real well. put in the new seal and everything and cleaned everything off under there so i am able to see if it stays dry. however it still kinda leaks, and now im really pissed off. i know i prolly shoulda changed the pan gasket but i dont wanna hear that, and i was wondering if anyone else has problems with their rear main on their LT1, as far as it being changed but still leaking. im really pissed off and im getting aggrivated because i still have to put a board under my car when it sits in the driveway because my dad doesnt want it to leak. wtf, this sucks
Re: rear main seal changed and still leaking
are you sure its not from the intake gasket??? Mine was and i would have sworn it was the rear main seal... but it wasnt... might want to reach by the back of your engine while its cool and feel around.

ya...there really isnt much to say except, why did you not put a new gasket in? You went through all that work and didnt replace it? Sorry you didnt want to here that but thats most likely the problem.

Most LT1 "rear main seal" leaks are actually intake leaks as was said above.

Not sure I follow all that was done. If you only needed to change the rear main seal, the oil pan did not need to be disturbed. The rear main seal does not require any sealer.

we took the oil pan off to take the seal housing off because the studs went through the pan, and we had to take off a few of the back bolts on the pan, and we couldnt get the rest of the pan off to chagne the whole gasket because the oil cooling lines or whatever they are, that run right next to the flange on the pan, were right in the way so we couldnt get two bolts out. the whole inside of my bellhousing and inspection cover and everything was coverd in oil and crap, it was deffinitley the rear main seal. i dont think the back of my intake was leaking, or is right now. ill check but i doubt it because the top of the bellhousing was pretty clean on the outside(where the intake would leak onto)

Ya didn't role the seal inside out when ya put it on the crank did ya??
If it's installed right it can't leak unless it was rolled or cut or if your seal had a spring around the lip, somehow the spring got off during installation a good sign it was rolled.
It is installed in the correct direction??
