rear engine oil leak...rear main?? fresh 357
rear engine oil leak...rear main?? fresh 357
well my car was sitting for 2yrs. half built, ran out of money during the build and had some issues that i needed to take care of. fast forward to now.....the car is running well aside for an oil leak.
I have checked everything....my valve covers were leaking and now are fixed and was really hoping that the leak would stop....nope. back by the trans is where you see the oil, it starts there and goes back. but i think a lot of it is being blown or thrown back there by the DS and wind from under the car.
I am working with a mechanic and he thinks the leak is a the rear main. I have a hard time swallowing that. the motor has less than 500miles on it and if the rear main is out i think it would be due to how it was installed??
other possible things: oil press switch, rear main seal adapter gasket, oil filter adapter gasket, rear intake gasket.
but the back of the intake is dry, the oil is really right by the trans/bell housing/etc.
the thing that really freaks me out is it drips onto the exhaust and smells of burning oil. not enough to start a fire or anything but my brand new forged 357 is leaking and im going nuts.
is it the rear main?? was it installed wrong? need advice.

Re: rear engine oil leak...rear main?? fresh 357
A lot of oil leaks are caused by bad PCV. Check the crankcase vacuum level to confirm. If the vacuum level is ok try using high mileage oil to swell up the seal. Worked wonders on my 70 chevelle.

thanks for the tip W/ PCV, i havent even broken in the motor yet. only 570 miles on it, plan to go synthetic @ 1000 miles. high mileage oil is the last thing i wana try tho.....
