Rear end gears

Hey I finally got the Camaro running but when I step on the gas I don’t get the torque I was looking for I was told that getting bigger gears would help, I have the stock 2.73s I was thinking 4.10s would be more than enough I’m just not sure how I should go about it I have a stock 10 bolt and was thinking I needed to replace the axles too I guess what I’m asking is what else would I need to do to keep everything as proportional as I can until I swap the trans to a manual and the LT1 to an LS1

Re: Rear end gears

Best bet with the 4L60E 4-speed automatic is 3.73:1. You didn’t include the year of your car, which is helpful, but I'll assume it's a 94-97 with the computer shifted 4L60E.

That will give you a 36.6% increase in torque off the line. Of course you'll hit the shift RPM at significantly lower MPH in each gear. The 4.10's would be overkill, and would reduce gas mileage, leaving the overdrive gear ratio of the 4L60E a bit ineffective. Would also require stickier tires.

Swap the ring and pinion. Since your 2.73 gear sits in. 2-series carrier (limited slip differential), you either need to get a replacement 3-series carrier, or a set of 3.73 gears specifically made to fit the 2-series carrier. In addition to the gear set, you need an install kit with all the parts and lube needed for the install. A “deluxe” kit is recommended because it will include new bearings. Axle replacement not necessary unless they are found to be damaged. The actual install is not simple, due to the need for precision setup.... professional install recommended.

Then you need to have your PCM reprogrammed with the new gear ratio, and the tranny shift tables tweaked.

Re: Rear end gears

first things first thanks for the reply and the time to answer my post. So off the line isn’t something I’m actually worried too much about my plan for this car is a drift build the easier it is to break traction for me the better and is this delux kit something I can buy off of a website like summit? And the specific 3.73 for the 2 series would you know of any places/ websites that I could start looking?

Re: Rear end gears

If you’re building a drift car and want to break traction, I’d keep the gears you have.

As for not getting the torque you wanted, I suspect what you need is a high-stall torque converter.

Unless of course something is wrong with the engine and you’re not making the torque in the first place.
