Gears

I just bought a 88 GTA to play with and drag it, and it has the 9 bolt with 3.23 gears. How much of a difference would going through the hassle of finding gears and a shop to do the swap to go to 3.73's, or is it not that big of a deal? I don't think I would do 4.11's or whatever the 9 bolt equivalent would be, just to keep it more streetable. Or should I go 4.11's? It does have a 700R4, so overdrive should help... Thanks!

Your 9-bolt will have 3.27 gears. 3.23 is the 10-bolt ratio. You can get 3.45 gears or 3.70 or 3.73 gears from http://www.diffsolutions.com/ or another rear end specialist. With a 700R4 you definitely do not want to go higher than 3.7x gears.

Sorry, it is late.

So, is it worth the effort to go from 3.27's (the tag is on the rear, so I am sure..) to 3.70/3.73's?

Thanks for the quick reply!

On a stock engine, probably not, but once you've upgraded the intake to where it flows at higher RPMs, then you'll want better gears.

I'd stick with the 3.27's for now and see how it does. A better torque converter would be a more worthwhile start probably. Better breathing and a 100 shot of nitrous makes the game really fun. Don't forget sticky tires or you won't be passing anyone until the end of the track.

That really sounds like more of a plan. I figure somewhere around a 2500 stall convertor and headers/exhaust are the first 2 mods......
