If you break your gears.....?

I currently have 4.10s in the old ten bolt. I would like to get some runs in once my new setup is ready and fully expect to break the ten bolt. That is with the 4.10s. I will get a set of 3.42s as they are much stronger and will actually allow traction with n2o.

Heres the question: If i break the 4.10s can i just throw the 3.42s in and have the rearend still work or will breaking the gears ruin the whole rearend.

No i dont even want to think about saving for the 9 in right now...as my wife is pissed off enough about me spending 1500 bucks on heads/cam. If i completely ruin the 10 bolt i will get one from a junk yard...lol.

Thank guys
James

Re: If you break your gears.....?

It all depends on how many teeth break off, how far the car moves after the teeth break off, and if the teeth get in between any moving parts....

In all honesty, it's too hard to say without knowing exactly what exactly breaks, and from there on, who knows what will need to be replaced/labor costs/etc.

It will probably be cheaper for you to find a spare 3.42 rear from a junkyard and just swap it in when yours grenades.

Chances are just the gears will break, but you never know. My friend blew 11 sets of gears on his rear end so far and everything else is fine as far as I know, it never took out the differential or anything like that.

WOW, eleven sets of gears, he could have bought a 12-bolt by now! This is similar to my friend who broke six rearends in his LS1 before he finally upgraded to a 9inch.
