Random Tech dual cat y-pipe for 96-97 F-body
Random Tech dual cat y-pipe for 96-97 F-body
I have a 1997 Camaro SS M6 and was wondering if anyone has used the Random Technologies dual cat y-pipe on a 96-97 F-body (part #943003). I am looking at purchasing one and was wondering if there is a noticeable power gain or if I should just stick with my factory y-pipe and cats. I have the SLP short tube headers and SLP 2OTL cat back system on already.
Re: Random Tech dual cat y-pipe for 96-97 F-body
From what I have read, the stock camaro catalytic converters are pretty high flow stock, though I cannot be positive. I also have a dual cat car, and haven't decided on headers yet, but if I went/had shorties I would use the stock y-pipe. Your not going to have a bigger diameter pipe, as the y-pipe is already 3 inches, and from what I know our O.E cats are okay performance wise. I mean, look at Lingenfelters LT1's, he retains stock cats and in his book states they only made a 2 or 3 hp difference than no cats at all. JMHO.

Email them with your present setup to find out if there are any fitment issues. I did and response was no go for SLP and Borla. Glad I did. Of course I'm sure any competent exhaust shop could have massaged the setup for a sum certain.

ill just post a copy of what i sent 97HUGGER for a response to his PM.
also, i know of 2 cars with emissions heads/cam combos that make over 400rwhp with the 96-97 slp's (and random tech dual cat y pipes) and run high 11s at 119mph. am i saying its the end all be all, no. but the biggest numbers ive ever seen from a hooker longtube setup is 118, and that wasnt with catalytic converters. im sure there are cars with longtubes out there running more mph on stock stock shortblocks naturally aspirated, but im just relating what ive seen with my own eyes.
the R/T Y pipe's internal diameter is 2.5" compared to the stocker which is about 1.75-2.0". i had a stock 96-97 y pipe with gutted cats and picked up 2mph in the 1/8 mile on a stock motored car.
it wasnt exactly an apples to apples comparison tho, because when i had the gutted stock y pipe i also had a 3" dynomax bullet and an axle turndown. when i put on the R/T y pipe, i also put on a 3" flowmaster single out catback. but i would say R/Ts 10hp estimate is actually a little conservative. i can honestly say that the R/T y pipe was one of the best mods for my car.
ive got a couple of buddies here in the DFW area both with stock cars like mine, but 96-97 models. one had slp shorties and a gutted stock 96-97 y pipe and was running 12.40s@108. the other car (identical except for headers) had hooker longtubes and a stainless works off road y pipe and went 12.40s but only ran 107mph. from what ive seen, the dual cat setup (especially with a good dual cat Y pipe) is as good or better then longtubes.
