Ram-Air Questions???
Ram-Air Questions???
I have a 1995 NON-Ramair Trans Am and I am buying the US Exotics Warbird Hood that has the hole for the functional ramair. My question is since the ram-air didnt come out till 1996, can i still get the parts from somewhere and will they fit my 95 and work with this hood?? US Exotics said it works with factory ram-air. Second, where can I find the box/parts for the ram air?? IM gonna call around local junk yards tomorrow but was hoping to find them new? Any help would be great. Thanks!!

Re: Ram-Air Questions???
SLP sells a complete airbox setup that is identical to the stock WS6 box, except it does not have the "Ram Air" or "Pontiac" logos, and it has a "weatherstrip" sort of sealer gasket that you can stick on the hood or the box, rather than the pre-molded gasket that comes glued to the stock box. The stock box fits fine on all years of the LT1. I have it on mine, but with the SLP "replica" hood. Not sure if the stock or SLP box works with other hoods. Suncoast also sells an airbox.

The factory style hoods have the rain baffles that prevent rain from entering the airbox.
Some of us who have Fair-weather-only cars have removed the baffles to allow straighter airflow to the filter. I've had mine de-baffled for going on 3 years now, I've been caught in some pretty torrential downpours at highway speeds and my car never really tweeked, I think the K&N got a little wet, but most of the water still hit the rear-baffle that's infront of the lower portion of the airbox.
Re: Ram-Air Questions???
Yes, the SLP setup will work on a 1995..... I have converted my T/A to ramair. You might want to check the "For Sale" area to see if you can pick up the set-up cheaper.
I still want to cut some of baffles out but I am unsure what to do (don't want to mess up anything). Anyone have a good how-to for baffle re-working?

Re: Ram-Air Questions???
My first approach to baffle-cutting was to reach in through the nostrils (ewwwwwww1) wirh a cutoff wheel on a Dremel flex drive, and cut 1/2" off the bottom of the front baffle. Then I cut about 1" off the top of the rear baffle. I drove in some decent downpours, and had no problems.

When the car became a "track" car, I cut the baffles completely out (the inside of the scoop is painted flat black, it just looks white in the flash):

I have never driven it in the rain in that configuration, but I have towed it in the rain, and there was a substantial amount of water on the filter. I suspect when you are driving in the rain with no baffles at all, the water is sucked in and you don't realize it is happening. I now tow with a foam rubber plug in the scoop to prevent water from getting in.

Re: Ram-Air Questions???
Your really gonna like it when you get rid of the old non-RA set up. When I did mine hearing the throttle body through the RA hood scoops was a very noticable difference and very cool. It was also the easiest bolt on with a real SOTP gain.

Re: Ram-Air Questions???
I removed the baffles like Injuneer is talking about, but I got alittle more agressive I removed about 3/4 to an inch from the front and removed the back one almost completely, I enlarged the holes for the water to drain down slightly, repainted. I havent had any problem yet (2 years). I like the Ram air much better than the CAIs, much easier to clean the filter and work around it, more room in the engine compartment as well when working.
When my 97 was stock it ran the same times as my 93 did with exhaust and a moroso CAI. So I would say they are at least equal.
