I'm sure you meant cooler not filter.

BTW, the cooler was dropped as an option from the LT1 f-bodies in 1996.

The primary reason I'm planning to remove my oil cooler is because I believe it's necessary for a Kooks header installation. I also think my cooler may have plugged a little bit upon getting my car running after having sat in storage for an extended period. I know that the oil pressure dropped significantly within 30-60 seconds of getting the car running. I replaced my sending unit, which helped a little. I also mounted a mechanical oil pressure gauge this past week, which seems to indicate there could be some issues with the gauge in my car. The mechanical gauge would read as high as 50psi, but the gauge in my car wouldn't really get any higher than 40psi. Afterwards, I was feeling pretty good about my pressure. But I guess lower oil pressure is fairly common on these engines. I just remember my car running well over 40psi before I parked it for 6 years. I didn't really want to get headers and an exhaust if there could be some internal issues with my engine.

Back to the oil cooler, I believe I'm clear on the bypass hose, GM PART # 10197675, and the bolts to replace the studs where the current cooler/adapter are mounted, GM PART # 3951644.

I'm just trying to confirm whether a new adapter, GM PART # 3952301, is required. If so, I'm assuming it would work regardless of model year. I haven't thoroughly reviewed my service manuals yet, but perhaps this is covered.

Does this mean I should put the filter back on my car?

I think I'm just going to buy the adapter. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. All of the parts listed shouldn't be more than 40 bucks. Using the adapter shoebox mentioned seems to be the preferred method of deleting the oil cooler.

Anyone running Kooks with the adapter in place?

Yes, you should always use a filter.

I was just joking about the filter. I'm no Mr. Goodwrench, but I'm pretty **** about keeping an oil filter on my cars.

GM clearly stated that the reason the Corvette LT1 did not have an oil cooler was because the Corvette engines were filled with Mobil 1 synthetic at the factory, and the synthetic oil was not degraded as much by higher operating temperatures, compared to conventional oil.

Was Mobil1 the factory fill in Z28's? I'm just curious because that's what I've always put in my car beginning with the initial oil change.

I would think that part of this mod is cleanup. The aluminum lines look just as nice as the air pump connection between the driver and passenger side.
