you aren't replacing the lifters?

I would assume you do, to take the lifters out and also for the oil pump drive gear.

but if not necessary, I don't want to have to pull the manifold off.

Yes you have to or the lifters will fall down into the block when you pull out the cam.... oh and the oil pump gear will keep you from even pulling the cam out.

I've never installed a cam before but if you were to remove the old cam, wouldn't the lifters fall down making it not possible to install the new cam unless you find a way to keep them held up?

I was under the assumption that the lifters were spring loaded and all you had to do was loosen the rocker arms to get the lifters to raise out of the way of the cam. I could be wrong........wouldn't be the first time

Yeah, better do a little more study on the engine design.

Incorrect. The lifter has a spring but it's contained within the lifter body itself.

You MUST remove the lifters and the oil pump gear from the block to remove the cam and that means pulling the intake.
