Questions on some mods
Questions on some mods
There's a corvette 'graveyard' around my house, and they also have some F-Bodies. So I went down there today to try to pick up some mods, and I think I've stumbled upon a great place to get some performance parts.
They had a Borla catback which was off of a 97' and I've got an 94'.
This catback had 2 pipes coming from the manifolds I figure, one of them had a cat, the other nothing. After the cat, they joined into one pipe. The guy said it was just so the computer would get the right readings. Will this catback fit on my 94?
Second question, they think they have some headers in the back for a 97'. Will they fit on my 94? I know when you order headers you need to specify what year car you have, but the guy was pretty certain they should work ok. Am I correct in the assumption that the only difference is the emissions hookups?
If so, could I block off the emisions, and use whatever year headers I wanted?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Questions on some mods
The difference between your car (OBDI) and the other car (OBDII) in this regard is that the newer models had 2 cats in the y-pipe while the older ones had only one after the y merged. You can get that borla if the price is right and get a y-pipe out of a 96-97.
As for those headers, don't get them if they're not long tube headers. Specific 96-97 headers are shorty type and the improvement in power is not worth it compared to the stock manifolds.

Re: Questions on some mods
yeah the 2-pipe section of the exhaust is the Ypipe...sounds stock.
you should be able to cut the pipe right after they merge, there should be a weld there. that's the actual "cat back" that you would buy if it were new. to mate that up to your stock 94 Ypipe you'll have to buy the S-bend pipe. SLP sells it as a kit, or you can have a shop bend one up for you (make sure it's mandrel bent).
but yeah, depending on the style of header off the 97, it should fit. but i agree, if they're shorties...theyre not worth the cost or hassle. go for longtubes.

Thanks for the replys.
The guy seems to recall them being Eldebrock headers. Not sure if they made longtubes or not. So, any header will basicly fit, emisions just will not work?
Thanks!

Re: Questions on some mods
The Y-pipe you describe is off a 96/97 dual cat car, if the merge is AFTER the cat. The reason the second cat is missing is because its bolted directly to the bottom of the drivers side exhaust manifold. When they pulled the Y-pipe, they pulled the drivers side off the bottom of the cat. Has nothing to do with "just so the computer would get the right readings."
AS far as headers.... if they were made specifically for a 96/97 they will be "dual-cat" headers, and the primaries on the drivers side will be all crunched up and snaking over the valve cover, so they can attach to the stock drivers side cat location. AS&M stopped making their dual-cat headers because they melted everything. I think JBA and SLP may still make them, but they are not "long tubes", and would be hard pressed to be described as anything but "shorties". You do not want them for your 94. The AIR connections would also not match.
