Questions about machine shop

Couple of questions. I recently called a machine shop ( i found the number on an old post on this board ) to get a quote on the work. I told him what I would be doing and he advised against a couple of things. I just wanted to know what your opinions were.

First off, the car will be NA, and most likely a pair of LE2 heads/cam.

Now the first thing he advised against was Eagle I-beam rods, due to clearancing issues with the cam. He said the bolts would hit the camshaft lobes?
And how much difference does having 6.0 rods as opposed to 5.7 rods make?

Another thing was the Keith black pistons. I know their not forged, but I'm planning N/A so I figured it was a good route.

I was quoted 800-1000 for machine work and 300 for balancing the internals.

Rod length does not influence clearance issues to any meaningful degree. However, those particular rods are not very good for clearance if it's a stroker. If it's stock stroke, there shouldn't be any issues with brand of rod.

KB is a decent piston for a mild NA motor.

Make sure you use Cap Screw Rods not Thru Bolt Rods, that's going to be the big key in the clearance on a stroker. Also if you do a Scat or Eagle I beam you will want bushed pins

For a inexpensive piston option the Mahle stuff is very nice and comes with rings for that price. The Mahle Pistons don't have a set bore dimension on them for piston to wall clearance, so if you are going 4.030" that is what want the final bore size to be, not more than that.

The KB will work, but either way make sure it's a flat top design, if he starts telling you that's too much compression for that a lot of customers running this setup are defying physics then. Zero deck the block (with a felpro gasket) or have the block decked to 9.010" and run the Mr Gasket head gasket. Paying attention to quench is key here.
