Question about opti spark

Ok so my car broke down due to optispark . will not run luckly (I guess) it was right beside a mechanic's garage. So I had them look at it and he gave me a estimate on the work. But what I do not uderstand is on the sheet it says: Dist.--$175. Cap and Rotor---$195. I thought that the optispark is the only thing I would have to replace??? he gave me a quote of $685 for everything. So I think I will do it my self!

Re: Question about opti spark

Ok, if he try's to get the optispark and cap/rotor seperatly from the parts stores, those prices are about right.

You can get the whole thing for around 250 from J. Cromer or Dal, and the install is not TOO bad.

Re: Question about opti spark

The Optispark distributor has two "halves".... the main body that holds the optical sensor, and the cap and rotor for the high voltage distribution. Body + Cap/rotor = 1 complete Optispark distributor.

Re: Question about opti spark

check ebay, I've seen new optis on there for $200 on buy it now, but Cromer and Dal have hooked up a lot of people here on the board and at least with them you're getting it from someone reputable around here.

and with what they are charging you for the cap and rotor you could get the MSD ones for about 150 from Jegs, not sure if there's a benefit to it or if anyone has tried it yet.

I always thought that the main body cannot be obtained seperatly from the dealer, it's either the full unit or the cap and rotor kit. Is there a PN for the body with the sensor?

I dunno about the dealer having only the main portion, but Checker/Shucks/Kragen sure did.

No, there is no part number for the housing and sensor.

From GM, you can buy the cap and rotor separately, but to get the other part, you have to buy a complete unit.
