Pushrod questions
Pushrod questions
I am putting in a Comp 230/236-112 cam, lifters, Pro Magnum 1.6 non self-aligning rockers, guideplates and ported and polished heads with Comp 987 springs. Comp recommends a 7940-16 High Tech pushrod (a one-piece design) with this cam. Are stock replacement pushrods OK in this application? Are the High Tech pushrods really that much stronger?
I'm asking because the High Tech pushrods are over $100 more than the OE replacement hardened pushrods.
Thanks,
BRAD

You need hardened pushrods for use with guideplates. The early LT1's had hardened pushrods but I'm not sure what year the cut-off is. Maybe '95 as that was the last year with cast iron heads but thats just a guess, I'm sure somebody here knows for sure.
FYI - the TrickFlow chromemoly ones are about $20 cheaper at Summit, they're offered in stock dimensions.
I went with new Comp regular hardened pushrods with the guideplates when I did my install. They were only $30 or so. I've seen it mentioned that the stockers were probably hardened, but for $30, the new Comp's were cheap insurance.
They've held up fine, btw.

I am in the same situation as you are. I have a 94Z and need hardened pushrods myself to go with my guide plates. My pushrods are one piece (didn't know they came any other way)and have a "dot" on them about 1/4 the way down from one end. Don't know if that tells me anything about if they are hardened or not though. Anyone know how to tell if a pushrod is hardened or not?

With that cam (and the springs to go with it, which I assume you have) you need a pushrod that's stronger than the stocker. Any brand with an 0.080" wall oughta do, but Comp's are nice.
