Question Help choosing a shiftkit for my car.

Looks like I'll be getting a midest 2800-3000 stall here fairly soon. I already have a good tranny cooler, but I need a shiftkit. I don't know anything about them, what makes one better/cheaper/more desirable than another, so help me out here!!

Car is a 1995 Z/28 with 3.23 gears and bolt ons....

Thanks
John

Stay away from the b&m kit. I have heard some bad things about those kits. Trans go seems to be the best kits around. TCI also makes a good kiit.

Thanks, I found the Transgo kit in Summit for $109, haven't been able to find the TCI kit though.

You can get a tci through summit or jegs. Probably special order. Its called a transcat kit.

STAY AWAY FROM TRANS-GO! I've been building transmissions for over 13 years. Everything that comes into my shop with a TG kit in it has a whole bench full of junk parts that come out of it. If you need specifics, the TG kits always burn up the 2-4 band and the 3-4 frictions.

Just curious, is it possible that is caused by the way the shift kit is installed? Maybe running too firm a shift? I don't have a shift kit, but have considered purchasing one.

So in your opinion, what is the better shift kit? Or is there a better option?

Why would the B&M kit be bad? I had the street/strip kit in my '92 RS with a 305 and I had NO problems. Heck, I could get it to break the tires loose into 2nd, which it could NEVER do before. I also never had any problems with the tranny, and I had the kit in for over 25K miles before I got rid of the car. I would like to know why not to use it, because I was planning on putting it in my Camaro.

The design of the TG kit itself is the problem, not the installation.
I build my own shift kits from various sources, such as Sonnax, and Fairbanks/Superior. As I've said in the past, though....A shift kit in a 700/4L60E is kinda like a band-aid on a bullet wound. These transmission really need internal modifications to make them last. They're not really even expensive mods, but they need to be addressed. Pump slide spring pressure is a big one. Elimination of the 3-4 "load release" springs is another. These transmissions also have a habit of rolling the weaker "French" input sprag that's in them. 3-4 clutch clearance is also very critical.

from what i've been told, the b&m kit takes fluid pressure away from other parts of the tranny. I do not build trannies but I had the b&m kit in 2 4L60E's and they both fried the clutches!

If the transmission is in "good" shape, then installing one of my slightly modifed Trans-Go Performance Shift kits should work fineThis is based on what engine modifications you have done, what torque converter you are using, what rear end gear ratio you have, etc. A Corvette servo is a must, if you do not already have one. On my builds, the Trans-Go Performance Shift kit is only a slight part of what I do to make these units live. The idea is to make smooth part throttle shifts, with the shifts getting firmer with more throttle, NOT bang or harsh shifts at part throttle. This all can be done by working with accumulation, and not against it.

Ok, here's where I'm at right now. I e-mailed a company called "Superior Transmission Products Inc." and got a hold of their dealer in the area. Their products were highly recommended to me. They don't make a shift kit for my tranny.

I called Summit and Jegs looking for a TCI shiftkit, they both had to special order it. I ordered my converter from Midwest(2800 stall, 9.5" w/lockup, 2.5 STR) and it is on the way, I don't want to wait on a shiftkit. I ended up buying a B&M Transpack. It was in stock, I didn't have to wait, and it was a lot cheaper than a transgo.

Also about the corvette servo, I thought that the LT1 F-body transmissions already had that I saw a listing for a corvette servo for sale, and it had a note on there that the 4L60E transmission in V8 equipped F-bodies already had it from the factory. Then again, I could have read it wrong or it could have been a typo, but you seem to know your stuff so I'll trust you on this.
