Hey guys,

My car is running pretty good right now but if I jump on it say on the freeway I get a puff of black smoke. What are a couple of the possible causes of this? Am I running rich?

The problems that I think i'm having right now are: EVAP system (I smell raw gas no leaks), needs plugs n wires, and dirty fuel filter. Anything else that I should check? I haven't scanned it yet so maybe that first.

Also, how do I troubleshoot the evap? Solenoid?

 

I am having the same problem. I do notice when changing my oil that I have accumulation of oil coming from the front of the motor. But after the car is parked for short or long periods of time I still see no leaks. But the puff of smoke is there if I get on it.

 

Get the car scanned. Are you throwing a SES light? My car has a SES light and I scanned it and it was my EVAP solenoid, I got a new one on the way. When I had my car on the dyno smoke was coming out of it a little, not that bad though, and I'm running rich but with Fuel Trim lean codes .

Well mine does it every time when i stab the throttle but clears up if i stay in the throttle,black smoke is a rich condition but it is normal for them to do it unless they have been programmed.

 

Same thing here, just when I initially stab it I get the puff. It goes away immediatley??

 

I think most everyone's car does that.

 

That and a little puff some times on start up.

 

hehehe, I got that one too. Ok, so it seems pretty normal. I can live with that, I still want to scan it though.


Shoebox, I checked your site about the EVAP system but couldn't find any info on how to troubleshoot it. Got any tips?

 

See if you can isolate the gas smell. Check the fuel pressure regulator to be sure there is no gas getting into the vacuum line. Remove and inspect all the EVAP hoses you can get off. They dry and crack with age. I just replaced a shor piece on mine where it connects on the LH side to the flexible lines going back to the canister. There was no smell, but the rubber hose was starting to crumble.

 

Yeah, I'm havin bout the same problem. Only I have a little bit of white smoke too. Where do you guys think that is comin from. If you go to the Las Vegas f body link that ixd97z28 has and go to the dyno vids. There is a white z...Mike A ...i think is what its called that does about the same as mine, I dont think mine is as bad but seems like the same symptoms. Thanks to anyone that replies.
