problems please help

so the mechanic said that i need to remove the engine to remove the heads to drill out a manifold bolt/stud (2 of them) on the drivers side and i was wondering if this is true and if anyone knows of a guide to remove the heads please show me

Remove the engine I don't think so.You can remove the head with the engine still in the car.I did this a while back myself.A good basic source of info would be the Haynes repair manual for these cars.Two big trouble spots to look out for when removing acylinder head on the LT1 are ;more broken manifold studs and removing the coolant crossover tube that connects both heads at the rear without damaging it.

and where are the studs broken? THere's quit a bit off room to dabble with on the driverside?

those aren't that bad to get to from underneth the car... if you have a dremmel and some patience. Now tapping in a new thread... that will be crap.


If your manifolds off...on the driverside... and you remove your steering linkage... I think you should have plenty of room toget the job done yourself.

i can get $15/hr labor cost...do you have any estimate on how many hours it would take a mechanic to do that?

depends on thier tools and thier knowledge... who really knows.

If It's that severe... I'd rather take the head off myself and let a machine shop do all the dirty work to the head. But there's a way around everything.
