problems with my lt1

This the first problem I have had since owning the car and do not have a clue what is going on.

My car is a 94 camaro with the 5.7 lt1. 155k miles and no mods.

The car starts fine but after it warms up it begins to miss and the oil pressure drops to about half of what it normaly runs at. You can smell gas in the exhaust and the car will back fire when you let up on the gas pedal. I couple times when I try to get my foot into it, the engine seems like it hicups and you can hear a rush of air through the motor. Then when you shut the car off it is hard to get it to start agn. Usualy have to grind on it about 10 secs for it to start.

I have already replaced the opti spark hoping that was the problem, but it is still doing the same thing. I am looking for suggestions and ways to narrow the cause down.

When was the last time the car had a tune-up? I'd check plugs and wires first.

Is the car throwing any codes?
Seems like it could be several things: ignition, fuel, vacuum leak, etc.
Are you getting proper fuel pressure to the rails?
I would hook up a pressure gauge and see what that tells you.
I've heard you can pull off the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator to see if it has any fuel leaking, that could mean the fpr is bad.
Have you opened your hood at night and looked carefully for arcing?
Check plugs and wires. I would have changed then when I replaced the opti, it's much easier then.
Someone who knows more may be able to help you narrow it down. Good luck.

I agree, start simple, work your way up.

it is not throwing any codes at all, for a while the abs in/op light would come on when it started to act up but has not done that for a long time now.

Just because the SES light is not on does not mean that it is not throwing any codes.

SES always coming on and off on the 94! join the club. I think it has something to do with the moon's pattern..

Doubt the abs in/op light has anything to do with the engine burning more fuel then usual.

There are a lot of things that could be wrong. If you O2 sensors are bad it will cause performance issues. The hard starting could be from a lack of fuel or a bad fuel pressure regulator. I would check fuel pressure like stated earlier and see where that goes. What is oil pressure after the car warms up at now thats its half of what it was before? Does the car smell like raw fuel after it warms up?

the oil pressure barely even moves the needle when it has warmed up. The car has not 1 single problem starting when it is cold. And yes it does smell like raw fewl once the it warms up and it is going through fuel faster than I can put it into it right now. But all this does not start happening til the car has warmed up. When it is cold the oil pressure is fine and and it runs fine.

I would agree with above do ur basic tune up first.

Plugs
wires
cap
FUEL FILTER
oil and filter.

Then see how she runs.

it sounds like the coolant temp sensor for the pcm thinks the cars cold when its warm.
