Problem at start up with my 1997 trans am

Ok here is the problem I am having with may mostly stock 90,000 mile 6spd Trans am. When I first start my car it will back fire through the intake and exaust,And if I try to drive it before it warms it it will back fire and almost fluid itself out.But after about five minuts it runs perfect!!! The check engine light is not on. It has came on twice in the past 8 months both times the code was for the cam position sensor. After much reading and the fact that the car runs perfect after five minuts I am sure that is not my problem. The only thing I can guess is that I may have a small intake air leak ( this would be unmetered air) and after the car warms up the intake may expand enough to seal up the intake leak. And yes I did replace the optispark.Anybody with any input or anybody that may have had this problem before please give me some advice. Thank you in advance for your time and replies.

Let's deal with what you think it is and then deal with what we know.

First, if your theory is correct about an intake leak slowly going away. Then monitoring vacuum level should show this. The vac level should gradually increase as it "seals" up.

Using a thicker liquid lubricant would also help you find the leak as well.

However, you allude to a code for the cam sensor but there technically is not a cam sensor. There are a hi and low feedback signal from the opti that is obviously driven by the cam.

The low res signal is very important. However, even the high res signal in the case of a DTC372 will disable the injector for a while. Same for a 1371, low res signal problem. The injector will be disabled. So if you know you have a feedback signal problem causing a code, best you track it down first and correct it before you go chasing ghosts.

Thank you for your reply, The code I have received only twice is po341. I plan on replacing the intake and gasket in a few months I just did not know if anyone else had a problem like this before. Thanks again.

Are you sure you got P0341?

I have the 97 LT1 code list directly from the GM tech website, and it does not list P0341 for the LT1. Neither does Shoebox's code list. As noted in the post above, there is no separate cam position sensor in the LT1. Its the high resolution (P0372) and low resolution (P1371) signals from the optical cam position sensor in the Opti.

Problems that are only present at cold startup can often be traced to problems with the coolant temp sensor.
