Idk if edelbrock shorties fit a stock y pipe. i have mac mids and i bought them from a friend that gave me the y with the headers. easy to change plugs and wires. If u do mac mids i suggest getting over the valve cover wires. they are cheaper than the MSD's u can get from summit and for 10 bux more u can get plugs. BTW, no notching of the K.

Sorry bro, but you're going about this the wrong way.

Before you get headers, you need a cat-back, PERIOD. Why don't you want a cat-back? Thousands of LT1 owners make this their first mod. Whatever you're going to spend on headers, spend it on a cat-back. First mod to any LT1 always needs to be exhaust and intake, specifically cat-back and CAI. Forget headers with a stock y-pipe and stock cat-back.

Where did you hear that some headers require notching of the k-member? If it's F-car specific, they bolt in. Granted the install isn't easy, but no headers require cutting of the k-member.

And the wire burning issue. They will only burn if you route them in a manner that will cause them to burn. IMO, go with stock routing with fiberglass heat sleeves. The heat sleeves will prevent any incidental contact and prevent spark jump to the header. If you can't route them like stock, OTVC might be a good bet as well, although I personally think the look is a bit much.

Do yourself a favor. Go cat-back first.

I would go cat back first, then long tubes.

However since you did not ask about that I will answer what I can.

I have never heard of anyone needs to cut up their k-member to install headers. Not sure on a header that fits stock pipe.

For an accurate answer, you need to tell us the year of your car, whether you have to meet any emissions regulations, etc. 93 headers are different than 94/95 headers, are different from 96/97 headers. Single cat headers (93-95) usually come with a dedicated Y-pipe, that would need to be welded to the stock single cat, without respect to whether you have an aftermarket cat-back or not. Dual cat emissions headers are typically designed to bolt up to the stock dual cat Y-pipe. But without knowing the year of your car, and the emissions requirements, people can't give you accurate answers.

Why not add a "signature" with basic info about your car - year, model, engine, tranny and any major mods.

Any header will burn your plug wires if you don't tie them out of the way carefully. I have stock wire routing with my Pacesetters, but I had to make pretty liberal use of zip ties to keep mine from burning.

I would suggest getting a nice catback also, DO NOT GET FLOWMASTER, does not flow any better than stock, some say it flows worse. I would suggest magnaflow, hooker, borla, gmmg, unless you want to be amazingly loud them go with slp loudmouth. Also, since we don't have to worry about emissions here in florida, go with longtube headers over the shortys or mids. Having this in mind, I'd say get your catback now, save for a few months, and then buy the new revised LPP headers, info on them can be found over at ls1tech in the lt1 section, just search for LPP headers.

No you don't. If he wants to retain the stock catback, he can run LT headers to a ORY and a cutout and make comparable power to any other LT/ORY car.

If you want to retain the stock y pipe your best bet is shorties. Edelbrock, BBK, etc.

I also agree that a cathback should be your first mod for the exhaust, but I also think the stock y pipe is very restrictive, and is the next place I would look. I have a hooker catback, and slp y pipe, and people always ask me if I have heades. Also look at slp's website. Their mid length headers are rated at 18hp over stock, and the y pipe alone is 12 hp, so unless you are modding your car this in my opinion is the way to go. Also if you live in a area where emissions are checked, you may fail if you have headers like where I live.

So just giving you a couple of ideas.
