Problem (again)
Problem (again)
Okay, so I just changed the head gaskets, and the car was running fine for 30 mins or so except minor tapping from a lifter. However, as I was pulling the car into my garage, I noticed white smoke pouring out from the hood. I looked down and noticed coolant leaking onto the y-pipe. I assumed it was just the rubber line I had fabricated for the steam pipe. So I just replaced the steam pipe with a stock one and tightened down the banjo bolts using oil drain plug washers in place of the original ones. However, after doing all of this work I took the car out for a test, and once the temp gauge got up to 100 or so white smoke started pouring out, and of course, about half a quart of coolant poured out onto the ground again. The car is running fine, and it's not missing or anything so I'm baffled. It was suggested that perhaps my friend hadn't properly tightened the head bolts. I watched him do them in order, working up to 67 ft.# But perhaps there was a problem. Wherever this leak is it's coming from the back passenger side of the engine. Also the engine is heating up fairly quickly...although I attribute that to the leak.
Thanks,
Greg
Thanks,

Also, a second odd problem, as I pulled into the garage this time, I noticed an odd gas smell, but the fuel rails are tightened down properly and as far as I can tell everything is connected well...only thing I noticed is that the fuel rails were also fairly hot, especially given the fact that the car was driven for like 5 minutes. Also just noticed I placed this in the wrong area...oops

Are you sure the oil drain plug washers are not contributing to the leak on the steam tube? Is your temperature reference in *F or *C?
I'll move this to LT1 Based Engine Tech for you.

Thanks. Possibly...only reason I'm using these is that someone else said he had used them on his lt1. However those bolts were tightened down enough that I wouldn't figure I would drain such amounts of coolant so quickly. However when I recheck the head bolts I'll check those as well.
Coolant leak found...my friend missed torquing down atleast the rear most bolt to the final 65 ft#. Fuel rail thing is still stumping me but I'll figure that out.
This brings me to the question, will I run into any problem simply going through and re-torquing the head bolts in sequence or should I take the head completely off and redo the head? (my financial limit is currently....0)
