Problem after I took alternator apart...
I took my alternator apart for polishing. Once I took it apart inside two black rectangular boxes came shooting out along with two springs. After fooling around with them for about 30 min I realized that they slide down into a white "housing". Well for the life of me I cannot get them to stay in there. They keep popping out before I can get the front of the alternator back on.
Anyone know how to do this?
Also I cant get that nut off on front, and I dont have access to air tools. What should I do??

Geez, that's what you get for trying to make your engine bay look nice
!!!!!! lol...j/k
.
Can't help you much with the internal prob. you've got. But, to get the pulley off (I assume that's what you mean by the nut), take it to Autozone. They should be able to get it off for ya. If not, I have air tools and a compressor, and could help ya out

Take a large paper clip or a piece of stiff wire and there are holes that u can put it thru to hold the brushes in [compressing those springs] until you reassemble the halves, then u pull the wire out[from the back of the alt...]
Good idea to clean the copper armature contact points too at this time..

I believe there is an allen key hole in the front of the shaft, that you can fab up a way to 'backhold ' the shaft then work the nut[ I ground two flats on a cheap socket that fit the front nut, used a pipe wrench on the flats. then put an allen key thru the drive hole..
Another idea might be to use a vise[ with wood blocks] to hold the rotor part of the alt [since you have it apart...]
Also remember to mark the halves, too, since it will go back together more than one way...
If you didn't you can eyeball the mounting holes to see which way they have to face..
And while you have the front pulley/fan off, and the rotor out, you may as well replace the front bearing, since it's easy to get to then...

Dave.....leave me alone!!!!
Ill go to autozone to see what they say...
Mtrhds94Z thanks aton for that.
I thought I really screwed things up once they came shooting out. Ill defenilty try the paper clip trick, and take your advice on the front bearing.

Matt, you can also try Auto Electric Co. at 1580 Seneca St. it's a dumpy little place, but those guys will have it together in minutes. (One of the guys that works there did the snow removal service at my old job, and i just happened to have his business card handy!). they did a 140 amp alternator conversion for my stereo system in my IROC, i think they charged me like 30 bucks, including removal/installation!!
