Preformance auto vs stick

well basicly what the topic says. what would be the differences in 1/4 mile times in an automatic vs a stick. In a track how much difference will there be? fuel economy? anything else you wana throw in

at the track you can't beat an auto, but I think stick is more fun on the street

With a good driver, autos and sticks make no difference...until you get into like the 9's & stuff...

I gotta respectfully disagree with Max.

for consistancy in bracket racing, yes an auto will be easier to be consistant. Many tracks do seperate stick from automatic in the street classes.

If you learn to drive manual well, which many people don't, it'll be quicker.

Bottom line is that weather, driver, mods, and condition of tune will be a much bigger factor.

The fun factor, manual hands down.

An auto won't be any faster than a good stick driver in general... but once you start getting extreme then the auto is the way to go. By extreme I mean pretty much not streetable - certainly not daily driver friendly. For an auto to have a real advantage you'd have to have it rebuilt (they seem real fragile - I'm constantly reading threads about them breaking/slipping etc). On top of that you'd definately need a pretty big stall which is certainly not street friendly and will kill your gas mileage. With that said, auto guys rarely if ever break the rear end with slicks.. some guys with a manual have broken the 10 bolt with nothing more than nitto drag radials. Either way you run into problems but in general I'd say a manual will be more street user friendly while still doing well at the strip. Besides they're more fun than an auto - rowing through the gears with this car is absolutely wild.

If you're not planning on bracket racing or making this an all out drag car then I'd vote m6.

look at my sig is all you need to know....i dont even have a stall....its a stocker++++i only have 2.73's so good gas milage

although if its a street only car.....NOTHING beats the fun factor of a manual, although i do agree a manual can be just as fast....i think a auto is a little meaner but alot less fun and expensive if somethign goes wrong

no, look at my sig!

faster time, only slightly more mods, really crappy weather, almost 100% humidity! thats a 13.2 when you factor in the extra 1000' from bad weather.

blue96 is just boasting cuz someone gave him props in another thread. JK , that is a great time man.

"Blue96Z28" look at my times...that is a VERY well driven M6 DEAD STOCK and i mean bumper to bumper, including a fram air filter. Just teh way it came from the factory. that was with 70k under its belt. I agree that sticks are quicker until you get into like the 9's and 10's....and the fun factor is hands down,,,,oh and BTW with my 3,42 gears i got 31-32 MPH numerous times on the highway with only a catback!!!

you two definetely have good times...the only thing i have to say vs 94formulabz is that i have the 2.73's which are HORRIBLE for 1/4's, i could run a 13.4 with my mph and the firestone sz50 eps that i have now.......but you guys definetely have good times especially you 86T/AWS6 man thats crazy w/stock airfilter.....gj guys

Stick shifts are not a freaking ride at the amusement park people.

Get a good clutch and you have dead leg and let's do some stop and go with a good setup that will handle 11's with slicks, yeah.

In drag racing and street racing, automatics own, simple. No mistakes, more consistent and I personally like not having to shift when I cruise and if I want to blow the tires off or just chirp a little, I shift manually, then back to OD I go.

Let's also not forget torque converter multiplication here...auto's that can leave @ 2000 and cut 1.5 60's.....

I think manuals are fun, for few minutes at least. Every f-bod bud I know personally that is in drag racing and going fast and making good power with M6's would have gone A4 route if they did it again.

I'll toast to that.

90% of what is discussed on this board could probably be eliminated if people just searched more and they had larger archives. I like when people give me good responses specific to my situation though, thats why i try to help others out when i can't actually be out driving or turning a wrench.

6spd is VERY harsh on the drivetrain
6spds wont allow for a torque converter
fastest 6spd = tanner = upper 9's
Autos are all over the place...
drag racing- you cant beat an auto, much less a propperly stalled one.

Rich Krause is replacing his T-56 with an automatic. Nuff said

I don't know anyone with a stock tranny turning 1.5s consistantly...secondly have you seen the 9 second 6 speed car the blue Z...seems like guy named tanner owned it...every F bod bud I know with an auto wish's they'd gone 6 speed...as for driving in the city my car is stock runs upper 13's and is by no means an 11 second car. However I've driven a few 11 second cars sure the car sucks if you're stuck behind some wreck on the highway, but driving on the street as I did, it was not a big deal...the 1 percent of the time you are stuck in traffic you wish you had an auto...the other 99 percent of the time I'm glad I've got my 6 gears...
