You should fix it right away for many reasons (too tired to list them now, but trust me on this one). Find out where the leak is coming from - you might get lucky and correct it by retorquing your header bolts. That's what I would do first.

The paper thing is the best way to go, since hot headers are really painful to the touch. Before you even start the car though, make sure all of your header bolts are tight, then check your collector bolts. After that's done, then start the car and see if it still leaks. Oh yeah, make sure your fans are off when you're looking for the leak or the paper thing won't work as well!

Years ago when I was running shorties I had a bad header leak, or so I thought. I changed the gasket numerous times, the collector gasket, most every gasket that I could even remotely think it might have been.

I eventually went to LT's and after my shorties were off, I noticed that I somehow got a hole in the one that was causing me problems all along.

Will you lose mph in the quarter mile from header leaks? I would think no, but I am curious.

Yes, and you can also burn exhaust valve(s) too if the leak(s) are large enough.

have you ever actually seen that happen? burt exhaust valves from header leaks. I mean I understand the theory behind it, but I was under the Impression youd have to pretty much run open heads to burn valves.

what?? i tighten all the bolts like 5 times after heat and cold cycle, i'm afraid it's coming from the Y pipe that connects to the pass. side header

On my Hooker shorties, I had a leak and changed my header gasket twice, etc. etc. until one day I checked my EGR connection and what do you know...it was loose!

Just another thing for you to check, FYI.
