Question Please Help...Ls1 vs Lt1

Hi I am new to the sight and have done my research about the Ls1 and Lt1. the reviews and comments about them are split. Some say one faster some more reliable. What i am trying to find out which one is trully better. I am looking at 4th and 5th Gen. Trans am and 4th gen. camros 1997 plus. I want all the facts and opinions. What i am thinking is... I have 10 grand, I can get a ls1 for 10k with 75000 miles. I can get an Lt2 with 75000 miles for about 7k. Now in your opinion what is the better buy. If i get Lt1 i have 3k for engine mods and costomization, if I get Ls1 I have no mod money. P.S. it will be manual but that doesn`t really matter. Please help me out with this decision, give all the facts and opinions you can. Thank You yes:

Hi there

If you can get a low mile ls1 in good condition I would go for that one. Alot of us LOVE the LT1 because of the reverse cooling and better torque that they give. Also you can mod a lt1 and spank a ls1. But alot also has to do with your mechanical abilities. All 4th gen fbodies can be a PIA to work on, and if you do not have mechanical abilities or funds, do not get a fbody. There are many people here who give great information, so learn from them. Hot rodding a fbody can be a great hobby, so look forward to hearing from you soon!!!!

You can find a decent LS1 for cheaper than 10k, that already has some mods and you will still be able to mod yourself. Just get an LS1. You wont be sorry either way though. both are great chevy motors in my opinion.

also there is no 5th gen trans am hehe..

I know my way around the wrench but i`m not the best. My friend Joe is a Wiz with all cars this kid is amazing. he worked on cars with his dad when he was 5. i will be mostly dependent on him and me. No matter what mods i get I need a spare pot for a tune after mods if i get Lt1. Thank you for your response can`t wait for more.

If we are talking HP, stock for stock, the LS1 is the better choice. If we are talking modded engines.....all bets are off. It's how deep your pockets are.....

I own a LT1 and it has been very reliable. Not everyone has had this luck. I think most problems seem to center around the opti-spark. 95's and up have the vented opti. That makes it more reliable.

I've enjoyed my LT1, but as a future project....I do plan to throw an LS1 in it, but it will be a few years before I even attempt that.

Who cares about which one is blah this or blah that. *You* need to decide
which one *you* want. That's all that counts - do not depend on folks'
opinions as to which car *you* should choose.

Unless you relly get a really nice one, you will put some money into it just to fix it up. LS1 car is a better bet in my opinion, just because it is newer and if you get one of the later ones, it might still be in good shape. There's nice examples of both out there if you look hard enough, but if I had my choice, I'd go with an LS1 Camaro or Firebird. the choice would be a lot tougher if it was down to a high mileage LS1 or a low mileage LT1.

For mods, the usual cold air intake and free flowing exhaust, then maybe some headers and a reprogram. If you go with an LT1 and plan to do headers, '96 and '97 dual cat cars are worse than '95 if you retain the cats. They have the newer computer though.

If you want to find a car for sale, go to the "Cars for Sale" forum. Do not use this forum for that purpose.

Before you buy anything, educate yourself. There is no "Lt2", there is no 5th Gen Trans Am (as you eventually figured out), but there is 5th Gen Camaro.... but not for $10,000.

LT1 is not for the faint of heart.

it can be reliable if you know all of its quriks and how to take care of it.

If i were to buy a used one right out of the box i would change

opti
water pump
plugs/wires
coil
EGR
