Piston Removal Question.

I am in the process of removing my pistons and I will not be using them again due to the fact that I am going with forged pistons. It states to label each piston with a brass numbering tool so that you know later on where they go. And do this to the main caps etc.

Is this necessary since I am going to be putting new pistons in anyhow? Also, will the weights need to be removed for the machine shop to bore, hone, magnaflux etc?

Also, if they do need to be stamped or labeled... How do I know which piston is the first? It doesnt clarify it too good in either of my books. It says driver side of the block, but doesnt state where at. Towards the firewall or towards the timing chain? And lastely and I going to need new counter weights since I am installing new forged pistons? I am boring .30 over.

Thanks!

Re: Piston Removal Question.

if your going to trash the pistons and rods i would't bother but be sure your not going to reuse them.

i'm not sure what weights wour talking about

number one piston is the first piston on the drivers side (closest to the front of the car) the drivers side has the odd number pistons, passenger side the even.

I used to do this religoiusly, stamping the rods and make sure everything goes back exactly where it cam from. I still mark the rods with a etcher because it avoids caps getting mixed up and also aids in making sure they go on right.

Re: Piston Removal Question.

Lol, I just started removing them and placing them in gallon zip lock bags per piston set. Luckily, I removed them starting from the front of the car and labeled the bags how I thought I would remember them on the block.

Then I came here and read your guys posts and luckily enough i removed them and labeled them correctly according to Reptile Z28's instructions.

However, The number 2 piston is stuck. The ring and the piston is out, however, it looks as though the rod is hitting on the inside of the bore. I cant back it out because the ring keeps catching the bore on the outside. So what can I do in order to remove this piston without hurting it?

Re: Piston Removal Question.

probably have i ridge on the top of the cylinder. either get the tool to remove the ridge, or if your not reusing the pistons, bang it out.

Piston identification is recommended if you are reusing the pistons.

It states to label each piston with a brass numbering tool so that you know later on where they go. And do this to the main caps etc.

Brass numbering tool? Huh? BTW, the main caps are identifed, if you look closely.

Also, will the weights need to be removed for the machine shop to bore, hone, magnaflux etc?

Huh?

And lastely and I going to need new counter weights since I am installing new forged pistons?

Huh?

Re: Piston Removal Question.

I think his weights and counterweight questions are due to balancing. No do not remove any weights or cut off your counterweights, just take the motor to the machine shop and let them due what is nessisary for your needs

Re: Piston Removal Question.

Thanks for you help guys. I called the machine shop today to make sure what I needed to do. I just removed the pistons and caps etc and placed them in gallon zip lock bags per piston setup. I then just removed the crank. I am getting all new pistons crank etc so I guess it didnt really matter anyhow.
