Transmissions don't just mysteriously fail. They are killed. First off, GM didn't build your trans, some rebuilder did.
If it failed as quickly as you say and it was full of fluid and had a good cooler (did anyone flush the cooler after the previous trans? - if not, stupid mistake.) someone f-ed the rebuild. GM builds millions of 4L60-E transmissions every year and most of them will survive 100,000+ miles of no fluid changes, towing and abuse. (Most of them are in trucks) Some fail earlier and the typical scenario is one rebuild after another because there are as many bad trans rebuilders out there as there are bad transmissions. - Get a good quality qualified rebuild with a warranty from a company that is not some fly-by-night deal that is rebuilding transmissions one day and then gone.

I'm in the same boat buddy, i'll be getting my trans rebuilt for the second time as soon as I get some dough for it. It died after about 5k on the rebuild so you aint the only one.

Do you have 4th? If not then the 3-4 clutches in the input housing are probably leaking. They can be airchecked through the case if you pull the valve body. The only thing that comes on for 4th is the 2-4 band. If it is only 3rd then check the servo seals as the servo is the 3rd accumulator. While you're in there, check the #7 check ball, it's encapsulated in the bottom of the bore, if it's leaking it will bleed 3-4 clutch oil. Dave1w41 is right, if the cooelr isn't flushed, the lack of cooling will take out the 3-4 clutches because these are the most used. You may also see bushing damage because of the lack of lube, most likely at the reaction gearset. If you have 4th then unplug the trans. connector. This will default the trans to 3rd (both shift sol. off), if the trans pulls like a 3rd gear start then possibly a sticking shift valve that corrects itself with no fluid pressure. Pull your valve body and check for debris sticking the valve. Hope this helps, don't get caught on the I-net at work. Good luck.

Abuse? I beg to differ. I've got both 700's and 4L60E's out there, that I've built, that are in the 10 and 11 second range.
It all depends on how it's built and what kind of parts are put in it. It's funny how we don't mind throwing thousands of dollars into an engine to make the car run, but everyone cringes when you tell them it's going to take an extra $500 (on top of normal rebuild price) to make their trans. hold that HP.
There's still alot of "Professional" transmission shops out there that use Trans-Go shift kits. The reason so many of your freshly rebuilt transmissions are failing is BECAUSE of the T-G kits!
If you need any more transmission testimonial, talk to Dirk (Racinlt1). I built his 4L60E over 2 years ago for his 11.2 second nitroused '97 Firebird. Are any of you guys that blow these things apart routinely even close to that time?
If anyone has read any of my other posts they may think I'm just trying to bash T-G. I can assure you that there's nothing personal against T-G except they make a product that tears stuff up! I want everyone's cars on here to run the best they can. I'm a diehard Camaro lover and racer. I just happen to build automatic transmissions for a living, as well. I hate seeing you guys spend money on junk.

Frank: I am not very knowledgable about automatics. The new Rossler TH400 sitting on the floor is the first one I've had in years. Can't wait to try it Too bad I didn't know a board member built race automatics, I would certainly have talked with you about it.

Anyway, my question relates to the T-G. I have heard that they wreck trannys before, from other people who know their stuff. What I have never had explained is "why?" What gives? I hope the answer helps me to understand autos a bit better.

Thanks.

I would like to know teh same thing as Rich, as I may be in need of a tranny rebuild soon anyway. Also, if you do not recommend T-G, then what brand of shift kit do you like? Thanks,

Kyle
