Pert plug, MAF screen, Hot August Nights

The members of this group continue to surprise me with new ideas or information. Yesterday I was reading a thred that concerned saving money and upgrades. One of you mentioned using a Pert cap to plug the noise reduction tube instead of spending dollars to purchase a 1LE elbow. I don't know the performance difference but zero dollars vs $45-$65 can go a long way in my book. Can you tell I am easily entertained. Today I removed the elbow, grabbed a Pert cap from the cabinet (I am a Pert user), and sure enough it fits, Next there will be a study to whether the old style cap vs the new style cap is the best I also took the time to clean the elbow inside and out. I did not reinstall the tube.
Also since I had the MAF off I decided to remove the screen and see if it makes a noticeable difference. At one time I had decided to keep the screen in the MAF. This group had recently discussed the MAF screen issue. Then while looking at parts on the Lingenfelter site I noticed he recommended leaving the screen in the MAF for daily users. Since then I have searched the Lingenfelter site and can not find that page. When I do I will post it.
July 31st I will be leaving to go to Hot August Nights in Reno NV. Are any of you going? If so PM me and we can make trade cell numbers so we can meet at one of the events.

Re: Pert plug, MAF screen, Hot August Nights

Removing the MAF screen is a bad idea.

I got this from Injuneer's site

"The calibration chart is based on the specific configuration of the stock MAF sensor and air inlet ducting. If you change any component of the system, you upset the calibration of the sensor. The "screen" - actually a honeycomb, made out of thin paper - is there to provide a uniform flow of air across the full face area of the sensor. In this way, since the amount of air flowing past the sensors is the same as the amount of air flowing in other parts of the sensor, it can calculate the total air mass flow through the sensor by measuring only the small sample of air that touches the wire. Removing the "screen", or removing the dividing wing in the housing inlet and outlet halves destroys the calibration of the sensor."

Do you think removing a screen is really going to allow that much more airflow?

Red face Re: Pert plug, MAF screen, Hot August Nights

this post intrigues me as I bought my 94Z with the descreened MAF. Im pretty sure its the stock MAF..not totally 100% sure though. Off and on my car has problems..as it is now with sputtering during acceleration (long/different story in another thread of mine)...but seriously..having this descreened..does it really hurt my car? If so, should i just unplug the sensor on the elbow connected to the Throttle Body or will that throw a code? I thought initially it was good to remove it for more air flow..but now i can see how it 'distributes' the air evenly for a good reading. Should i waste the money in buying a used one that has a screen in it or just leave it? I have other mods like all the internals of my engine (pistons.valve springs, bigger cam, rods, etc) and after market exhaust with a K/N filter setup. What do you think?>
P.S....also, what is this 'Pert cap' you're all talking about? I picutre a Pert-Plus shampoo bottle top LOL
Thanks, Derek

Welcome to CamaroZ28.com I'm glad you like it here...

but please remember these 3 words / subjects

MAF,Optispark, and LT-1 VS. LS-1

Any post concerning modifying, adjusting, or debates of any of the formentioned will result in countless post and endless threads of users arguing with eachother.

Thankyou

I beleive the MAF can be recalibrated via PCM tuning for a removed screen. Not 100% sure on that but thats what i have been told. If you car has a lot of mods and you bought it that way it might have some kind of tuning and maybe the MAF was recalibrated. I think the typical problems with the descreened MAF is a rough idle and hard starting. Not sure if it is a contributing factor to your problems or not.

Unplugging the MAF will result in a SES light, but the car will run in speed desity mode.

As far as the Pert cap goes, thats exactly what it is, the cap off of a pert plus shampoo bottle. It is a perfect fit to plug the hole for the air silencer in the intake elbow.

Question Re: Pert plug, MAF screen, Hot August Nights

air silencer in the intake elbow? you referring to the rubber elbow directly connected to the Throttle Body?..only thing on that is the air sensor (passenger side of elbow)..that ive seen. If you're referring to the K/N elbow..there is nothing on that..that i can see..and the only other thing in the air intake setup that i know of is the MAF which obviously isnt what you're talking about.
Whatever this 'air silencer' is..what exactly is it for and what does plugging it do? (besides an obvious name..to silence air passing through..wherever this may be you're talking about)..thanks..

Re: Pert plug, MAF screen, Hot August Nights

The rubber elbow that is directly connected to the throttle body has a hard plastic tube on the bottom side of it that goes straight down bye the radiator. You cant see it unless you crawl under the car or take that elbow off.

Im not excatly sure what the function of it is, whether to catch water that may have entrered the intake, or silence the air coming in. Im not sure if there are any real gains to be had with getting rid of it or not.

I still have mine in place.

If you cant find it yours might be gone already.
