permanent fuel gauge

Car has a gauge on the fuel rail that I believe is leaking. My pressure is like 10 psi low and I hear a hissing sound while its priming. I use the connector under hood to prime so I can hear. I want to do away with the gauge so what do I need to put in the shrader? Is there a safer way to hook a permanent gauge up? I like seeing my pressure.

What will the car act like with 10psi less pressure than it needs?

Thanx

Re: permanent fuel gauge

Do you mean actually on the large, aluminum fuel rail, or on the hard line that runs into the rear of the fuel rail? I suspect the pressure gauge is attached to the Schrader valve. Look at Shoebox's photo and see if this is correct:

http://shbox.com/1/fp_reg.jpg

It's unlikely that the fuel pressure in the rails is as low as the leaking gauge indicates. The 10psi delta pressure is lost when the fuel squeezes through the tiny leak. If you did lose 10psi, your fuel flow would drop by 12.2% and, based on O2 sensor feedback, the long term fuel corrections would be used to raise the injector pulse width to compensate for the fuel shortfall.

It is on the shrader valve and I want to take it off. Where can I get the guts that go inside of it?

I have read that it is a fire hazard having it on there. Is it? If It isn't I will just make up a new fitting to get it to stop leaking.

Can I just make new fitting out of copper? Would thread sealer work or do I need to use Teflon tape?

Anyone know where to get the insides of the valve? None of the auto stores around here have them and act stupid when I ask for them.

Also, anyone have an electric gauge hooked up?

Re: permanent fuel gauge

To put a permanent gauge on the Schrader valve, you usually have to unscrew the valve core... similar to the core in a tire valve or an A/C charge valve. You can try an auto parts store for a new core. You have to make sure it's rated for gasoline exposure. GM uses the same basic valve on everything, so the replacement core should be easy to find.

There is no fire hazard, unless the connection leaks. I've used the Schrader valve in the past, and never had a problem. It's like anything.... you have to do a correct install.

Are you sure it's the connection of the gauge to the Schrader valve that is leaking? If someone over-tightened the gauge on the valve, it's possible the valve is cracking off the hard line. It's only swaged on there, not welded. That's a bigger problem.

Not exactly sure what's leaking. I will end up pulling the rail and checking it all out. Do you know where to get the core for the valve? People at auto parts store say no.

Try a GM (uggghhh) dealer parts department.

Re: permanent fuel gauge

This is the AC Delco part # for a fuel resistant valve core, plus plastic cap:

AC Delco #12570619

Amazingly, an online search reveals that this kit cost about $20 -25 most places. Rock Auto shows it for $10 for a no-name close-out part, and $18 for "regular inventory".
