Question PCM question

I may have to replace my cars computer.....however I am confused as to what the difference between the PCM and ECM is, and which one i would need to replace.......and where to find it for cheap......Scoggin Dickey shows part #16188051
found part number here as PCM-REMAN $455, but gmpartsdirect.com showed an ECM-REMAN with price being $112...i assume REMAN means remanufactured??

Please review guidelines for posting on Advanced Tech. Questions regarding part numbers for a specific engine/vehicle belong on the forum for that vehicle... in this case "LT1 Tech".

ECM was the terminology used only for the 93's.... because it controlled only the Engine. In 94 they changed the name to PCM, because by controlling the 4l60E tranny and skip shift on the T56, it was now a Powertrain Control Module.

Just tell them what year you have and they will tell you the part #. Or try Rob/Shoebox's excellent website that has a ton of part #'s.

Moving to LT1 Tech......

PCM = powertrain control module
ECM = engine control module
They are essentially two different terms for the same thing.
reman = remanufactured

Get a used PCM from Ken Kelly at www.carputing.com for ~$150 and have him load a stock program for your car. Otherwise you will have to pay a dealer to do it. If you buy it from SD GMPD it will not have a program.
